well I need the hard top because the soft top is junk. I tried to put it up and it ended up cracking and ripping in a few places because it was so old and dry. Also if i sell parts off the car I can only claim up to $500 for the budget.

Check that site out also if you haven't yet. Good writeups on adding lightness.

Also you could do like one of the local Autocross guys did and simply chop the whole A pillar and windshield off, making it a speedster. Selling the Hardtop could get you $800 and while it would be nice to have that, you need that money to get the car up to snuff.

Yaaay! Another challenge Miata . This year will be my third time attending with the Miata. I'm in for the win, so don't try too hard .
It sounds like you're off to a good start with your build. In additon to the added power from a turbo, suspension is very important, LSD, helps a lot too. As far as the fuel pump goes, source an external one from an '80's VW and run it inline with your stocker. Share the power source with the stocker and you're set with 115+ PSI. 1.8L injectors will be sufficient for 10 PSI or so. An intercooler is a must. I rigged one from a Volvo into mine and it worked surprisingly well.
Unfortunately, you can reclaim a maximum of $500 since that's how much you paid for the car. Add in a few parts cars, and the reclamation value goes up with the amount you paid for them.
Before I divulge all of my secrets, I'll say I look forward to seeing you there this year. It seems as though lots of Miatas are lined up for attendance this year. We'll see how many show, hehe.
Good luck with the build!

Its nice to know someone else who has done this before. This will be my first time and i don't think I'll be much of a threat. I really wanted to go last year with my friends but I could not get the time off from work. They entered a white BWM 325is and placed middle of the pack. I really don't care where I place as long as I do better then them.
Also do you have any suspension tips?

Haha, we know the same people (sorta). A good friend entered with his supercharged E30 (I built and installed the MS for his car :P). I've got a few pics around here with the 3 E30s together that were in attendance.

So I started looking over the Miata tonight just to get to get a better idea of its condition. Here are a few i noticed:
Good size power steering leak (no big deal, its going to be manual steering soon)
All coils are broken. Looks like they were heated and 3 or 4 coils broke. (Can't wait to take pictures!)
Control arms and subframe look like they were in the ocean.
Tried the brakes again and now a few lines leak.
Car has 9 lug nuts total (wish I knew that before driving it over a mile to my house)
battery is dead but I'm trying to charge it up slowly.
Trunk lid has some rust.
I decided not to open the hood tonight. I get very disappointed when I go under there. Tomorrow I'm going to do a leak down test and clean up a few things. Then if i have time I'm going to check the local junk yards for Miatas.
