Default 99 turbo questions

hi im new to miatas my knowledge of them is limited as far as what the best modifications r. im interested in turboing my car it has 45k miles on it and i baby it. im not looking for tons of hp but i want enough power to not get wasted by evey car on the road. im mechanic and good with fab work so as far as istallation and all that stuff im fine with but im getting lost in the miata world when it comes to the fuel management portion. not sure what route to go dont really want to spend the money on a stand alone pcm and it seems a bit too much for what i want. so do i get some sort of piggy back set up or an fpr or bigger injectors? also is timming an issue? if anyone could help shed a little light on what would b best to do for a low boost daily driver set up. thanks

You want a standalone ECU. The stock ECU is not designed for boost.

There are several 99/00 megasquirts in the for sale section. You'll end up spending as much on piggyback bandaids trying to get everything sorted out as you will just buying a megasquirt.

Personally, I'd buy a megasquirt, get it installed and take some time to learn the software on a stock car. You'll be able to pick up a few hp and mpg and learn the basics of tuning before complicating things with a turbo. Once you've got the hang of it, start looking for turbo bits that meet your power goals.
