New to Boost
Hi guys, I'm net to boost as well as the forum. So I'd like to say Hi, and thanks for any help in advance.
First I'll let you know what I have, 02 Special Edition (1.8L obviously) so far the only mod is my exhaust, 2 and 1/4 inch unresonated straight pipe still have the cat on for emissions, which exits through a 4 inch tip.
Now...my friend owns an 02 WRX Automatic (if that makes a difference) and he is upgrading to a much bigger turbo, will his old turbo run well on my car? I want to run anywhere from 5-7 lbs at first off the stock motor. Other than piping and an intercooler what other necessary DIY parts are NEEDED obviously things like BOV are not...although I have had ppl tell me they are necessary...IDK thou. Assuming everything goes as planned if I am able to run it between 5-7 lbs will I need a new exhaust...and how much HP roughly will I have.
Thanks,
Nick

There is a sticky in the DIY TURBO forum. It is the FAQ and bible for anyone wanting to turbo their miata. Read that, then search a little and I guarantee most of your questions will be answered. Once you do that ask away and someone will most likely answer.
As for the WRX turbo, they're pretty small and spool fast. They have a weird turbine inlet flange, so the only manifold you will find for it will be custom so I don't recommend going that route unless you can get fabrication done cheap or do it yourself.
Here's that FAQ. https://www.miataturbo.net/forums/showthread.php?t=4288

Like cjernigan said, BOV's aren't necessary, but either a BOV or recirculating valve (recirculates the air back into the intake) is a must. It is also a good idea to put it between the intercooler and throttle body so that your IC has no extra stress (if I have heard correctly). But back to the point, some BOV's don't work with the stock ecu (if you were going to use it) and that is about my mental capacity on this subject. However for the rest of the setup there are many ways to go, you could use an fpr, piggyback, or new ecu, the choice (and money) is yours.

it's really only necessary after about 5-6-7psi when you can start to hear the compressor surge.
but for the price of a bosch, why not?
