I know EM is essential, but I thought perhaps a Miata would be a bit more simple consider it's less technologically advanced system. I guess I'll have to start by piecing a MS system. When I've got enough set aside for a complete MS build I look around the EM section for help building the actual setup. I've looked at the build thread for the MS by braineck and it's pretty complete; I'll just need to actually hold the items in my hand to get a better sense of it.

The Miata is in very good condition. Close to 160psi on all four. Rear end is good. If anything, all it needs is a new clutch because the pilot bearing might be out/loose, it's making a scratchy noise in fifth gear (video of it in the other thread).
I don't drive very hard, I think the stock rear can handle the boost level I plan to run. Otherwise, I'll only replace it if/when it breaks. I have another car to use if this one does ---- out.

I had a 2004 WRX. It only had catless up/down pipes and a pretty sort out open source tune. It peaked at 21 and tapered to 17 psi. It was actually a very safe and reliable tune despite the higher boost levels. A local tuner did all the tuning. However, the stock turbo seals eventually started wearing lightly and I had a huge urge to upgrade only, but knew I couldn't afford it so I sold the whole car to prevent me from racking up bills. I didn't owe any on the car since it was bought outright, but being in college and holding a part time job doesn't equal a good mixture for dumping money into a car.

I'm not exactly new to the turbo cars. I just haven't built a complete turbo myself and that's something I want to accomplish. This is the reason I have a Miata. They're small, simple, and cheap.

Also, thanks for the help and advice. I'll update as I go along, starting with EM.

Sounds like you got your ---- together. As far as getting the MS, they come up for sale here fairly regularly, but if you can build a turbo car you can solder together an MS and if you need help there are a lot of people on here to answer questions.

A few days ago somebody was selling a MS1 3.0 for like $250, may still be around.

Edit: Oh yeah, and you can brake a 1.6 diff on stock power.

You're horribly mistaken. I've heard of a few lasting a while under boost, mine included. It lasted roughly 15,000 boosted miles and 5 or so track days. Not bad, but it was an incredibly poorly tuned setup with zero hard launches. The stock 1.6 clutch won't hold more than 3, maybe 4 psi on a small snail except maybe first or second gear. After that it'll start slipping as soon as you hit boost.

The MS DIY kits are the cheapest, although I'd stick around and keep an eye on the classifieds. I know Wayne_Curr just sold his MSII for $175. It was his first so it wasn't pretty, but it worked. Find something like that or get a braineack/reverend/jeff_kulenkoski unit for <$500.
