Kewl...does it use some kind of beehive spring to hold the two pieces together? And why not weld around the entire outside of the turbine outlet flange? Must be just "the way it's done" when welding the main bead on the inside of the flange.

I thought the same thing at first when I saw it, but the main bead is on the inside edge (which I guess is enough), and this way you don't run into problems with the hardware getting too close to the welds.

Yeah, I figured the main weld is on the inside, but why weld the outside at all, then? Or, is it any better/worse to weld the entire outside of the flange and then only a little bit of the inside (the inverse of what was done here)?
Well, upon looking at the pic more closely, I see that the weld could've interfered with the stud/flange hole area.

First off, that DP looks top notch. 
Ah...was wondering what those little nubs were for.
Looking again, it looks like the area without welding is right by the bolt holes to avoid any intereference as you said. Talk about attention to detail.

One thing I can see is that the pipe mates all the way to the inside of the flange. I dunno if that's why. Maybe I'll ask Corky next time I give BEGi a call. Either way, it works.
BTW I was right about the source of my manifold cracking. Check out where the flange was welded to the DP. Can you see a problem?

Ouch! I decided to fab a transmission bracket for my downpipe.
1500 miles later and not a problem. Hopefully it holds up.

the reason that the inside is fully welded and the outside is only partial is also for thermal expansion. I did this on my dp also. corky covers this in his book.
