Question VVT Oil Feed

Hi guys,
I've just joined the forum. I've got a 2002 Sport that I'm turbocharging. I've got a Reverant built MS3 installed and my turbo should be arriving today so I've decided to tackle the oil supply. As I have the VVT it seems sensible to take a feed off the VVT 'unit?' on the cam cover. I believe this has been done before but I'm having trouble finding any information on it. Does anyone know if I can simply take out the bolt 'A' and make a fitting or if I would need to drill and tap somewhere like 'B' in the photo? Any advice on how I should go about this and whether it's a good or bad idea would be great.
Cheers
James

Tee off the oil pressure sender under the intake manifold like everyone else. Buy the TSE adapter and then run your -4an line around the back of the engine.

Thanks for the reply, I may well go down that that route. My thoughts were as the VVT takes it's oil from there anyway just taking it from higher up would save a bit of piping and could potentially be simpler. I'll see if anyone posts anything on here and have a play on the weekend.

I've taken the oil supply from the VVT actuator. The link you posted above doesn't work, so I don't know if it is A or B. I had a custom fitting made at a machine shop for the oil line.

Hi Dimitris, I'm hoping if that hex bolt/grub screw 'A' is a viable feed port I could just get a converter off eBay to match my AN line which are relatively cheap. If not I'd probably try drilling and tapping 'B' not sure if that's a very good idea though! I've uploaded it to photobucket now which should work. Also guys I'm running a ball bearing turbo so it shouldn't be using much oil and either way it's coming from the same place as the oil pressure sender so I can't see it being any worse than taking it from there?

I'm using A with a ball bearing Garrett turbo. No issues so far.

I'll check tomorrow mate, luckily my fitting kit came with a T that had an adapter in it that went from whatever A is to my 4AN feed line. It's well over 1/8" though I believe. This is the kit I ordered not sure if it says it anywhere Garrett Ball Bearing Turbo Oil Water Line Gasket Install Kit GT2854R GT2860R (RS | eBay

Oh my god. Never thought to use that location. that would def simplify plumbing under the manifold and would be far easier to reach to correct any leaks than on either side of the block.

I've been reading soviet's build thread over the last few and I know they talked about it somewhere around page 50-60. From the way it sounded it's definitely a decent option.

I'm not sure what the threads are for that port, but its close to 1/8 npt. I ran a 1/8 npt tap through it and its working great for me. npt to AN fitting are very easy to find

I got the car running yesterday and I've been trying to track down a nasty noise. I've narrowed it down to what seems to be the VVT mechanism, it sounds identical to this..
It happens at a certain rpm above idle and sounds particuarly bad on the overun.
I'm wandering if I'm pulling too much oil away from the VVT mechanism but this seems unlikely to me as I'm running a 1mm restrictor. Has anyone who used this location come across a similar issue? If not I'm thinking I have a more severe issue as it does sound pretty bad.

Oh and I've measued the plug I took out, it's outer threads measure 9.81mm if that's any use.

Replug the hole and see if it goes away?

Thanks for the reply, I didn't fancy removing the turbo again (as the turbo wouldn't have oil) with my DIY manifold it's a pain to remove so I've ordered a cheap ebay sandwich plate to try a different feed, seems like the NC cars suffer from a similar noise but I'm not sure how similar their VVT system is to the MK2.5's. I only drove the car a few times before starting the project as I have another MK2 that I use normally and didn't really rev the engine with the bonnet up so I'm wandering if it's been like it all the time and I just haven't noticed. I'll update this if I make any progress.

I never considered that plug, never even noticed it before. I ended up drilling tapping the rear cast piece on that hardline and using a 1/8 npt to -4an adapter, there wasnt much threads of engagement on the npt side, but it never leaked.

Sandwich plates work, but cheap ones have always leaked for me. Return it and buy that tee fitting and a length of -4an line to go off the oil pressure sender. For diagnosis obviously.

Also if feeding the turbo from a sandwich plate, that's all pre-filtered oil.

You can move your pressure sender to the sandwich plate, and source the feed from the 1/8" bspt sender port.
