Default accelerator occasionally getting stuck totally open

This is happening more and more often. I floor the accelerator and it gets stuck totally open. This started to happen about 6 months ago and it's becoming more and more frequent.

What I do every time it happens is open the hood and move the cable and it goes back to normal.

Can someone tell me what's going on and how to fix it?

Thanks

Hmm...Lube the cable, check cable tension/freeplay, look under the dash at the pedals to see anything odd?

Check your throttle body shaft too. Before mine broke, it would stick.

I already lubed the cable and doublechecked its tension. No issues with the pedal.

Thanks

This may be the real cause. I'll follow up on this and let you know.

BTW, I still love that car!

Didn't you do a coolant reroute off the back of the head? If you routed it cold side check that the throttle arm isn't rubbing against the coolant hose. If it's like mine it didn't do it all the time. Just the right combination of actions and twisting of the engine/chassis would do it. I just zip tied the hose to keep it lower and away from the throttle body swing arm.

You're right cueball. I did indeed!

Thanks. I'll have to check that. I also used the 1.8 L housing so there's a weird curve in the hose.

All the good advice was given, so all I have is some mild funny for you.

Are you using Toyota floor mats?

Do you have a coolant reroute going on the cold side? I had this EXACT issue and it was the throttle "clock" (or wtf ever you call it) hitting on my reroute hose causing it to stick open or stick at part throttle.

EDIT: I fail, cueball already said it. :(

Toyota has a massive recall campaign due to their floormats causing the gas pedal to get stuck.

The throttle return on my truck got sluggish & sticky once and it turned out that the butterfly shaft had just gotten gummed up with intake gunk. A little EFI cleaner and scrubbing with a toothbrush did the trick.

as i have read and heard, but from my experiences, a lot of mitsu's do it too, if the pegs on the bottom of the mat are worn out

Buck up little camper! We coldside rerouters seem to have had some of the same issues.

I'm really curious if this was Rafa's issue too. I only had the problem on track days and it scared the **** out of me until I figured it out. I cleaned the throttle body, lubed the arm, lubed the cable then... duh, it was hitting that damn hose.
