Default Exhaust Routing Option (NZ)

Friend from NZ was telling me about his plan for an Mx5 exhaust. Sounded interesting enough to post, so I asked him to take pics. Definitely an option I'm considering in the future. I think that's a 13" can on that muff - but I like the idea of getting the spare under the trunk w/o having to cut out the skin. Mine is that way because my bumper was already trashed from being rear-ended (yes I kept the cash - spent it on racing :gay. - rob

that's different.

why the need for two resonators though? i think a langer resonator in the midpipe would have the same effect at what he's doing, then you would have more room in the rear subframe area with just tubing.

The red one looks more like a cherry bomb muffler than a resonator

it's being used as a resonator on that system. i used a 4" bullet muffle (cherry bomb) as a resonator on the midpipe. Bruce has this exhaust now.

He wanted it quiet-er, like me. I'm running a turbo muff AND an 18" glasspack. What I like about the quiet exhaust is how easy it is to hear the turbo spool up. Sounds wicked.

are the cherry bombs perfed or louvered?

probably- they're cheap and every cheap glasspack I've seen is louvered. Bell mentions running them the "wrong" way in a turbo set so the louveres don't scoop the flow, but then they don't work as well. Mine is the right way. My thinking was that an entire 3" exhaust would compensate for some of the other inefficiencies.

how loud are these cars with 3"? Do I really need a muffler with 3" after the turbo?

A restrictive exhaust will rob you of more power than you can imagine. Just look at my 15psi dyno. I was being robbed of a minimum 30whp. Sadly I got too aggressive with my tune and have fux0rd my engine.

a 3" resonated exhaust with a decent muffler isn't loud at all. way quieter than any "quiet" N/A system. For example: my car stock with the whole goodwin head to tip exhaust, cat, resonated, and the super silencer tip is WAY louder than it was with the 3 inch exhaust and turbo.

how much are those cherry bombs? the perf core 'resonator' i run was like $35.

I always thought the idea of two 4" x 18" round Magnaflows would be cool, then dumping out the driver side.

Or even going as far as fitting 3 up there for ultra stealth...I really hate loud exhausts.

they aren't quiet enough. that's why I swapped out my 12" dynomax ultra flo welded for a ginormous 22" long magnaflow.

The top is stock. The bottom is the ultra-flo welded dynomax.

the current muffler is bigger. it got rid of the 3000 rpm drone on the freeway. very livable.
