They have a 1352cc in the ZX-14, comparable to a 'Busa. There is a supercharged 1500cc version of the old ZX-12 motor in their jet skis though...
Other than that the only 1.5Ls I can think of are V-twins.

Remember, two of the guys building this car have CBR1000-powered LeMons cars, and THEY came up with the Miata transmission idea after living with those awesome dog boxes.

Yea, the dog box thing is really awesome until you wear out all your dogs in the first year, or accidentally nose the car down a driveway and then can't back yourself out, or stall all the time because no flywheel+2000-lb car+tall first gear isn't nearly as cool as you imagined.

Several guys with homebrew bike-engine cars (Se7en-style) have been experimenting with using a starter motor on the driveshaft for reverse. Apparently it's cheap and reliable.
Of course, if cheap isn't your thing...

I should think the fail point would be the clutch, though. I know lots of FSAE teams run into issues there before the actual gearbox. The drivetrain was designed for a single, narrow tire, and instead it's trying to spin two much larger tires. In a 400lb car with 7" slicks it's a slight issue, I'd imagine in a 2000lb car it'd be a huge problem. That clutch would **** the bed before you could get the rest of the bugs ironed out.

Some sort of scatter shield around the bellhousing may be smart. I don't think there's much experience with a miata flywheel spinning to 11k, you wouldn't want your legs next to it if it comes apart at that speed.

Its not spinning to 11k. They're using the gear from the 'busa tranny to keep the engine at 11k but slow the Miata flywheel down to 6900 rpm or something close to that. Also, loltorquemultiplication.

Ahh yeah duh, thanks for catching that for me. A quick google search says the 'busa primary ratio is 1.596, so 11k crank would be 6900rpm at the new "output" shaft. Perfect. And yeah, 1.596x torque multiplication on an already torquey boosted 'busa is gonna be sick.
