Article grossly misses the point
Someone sent me this article tonight from an Oregon newspaper:
----
Traffic stop yields 51 pounds of cocaine
by Lynne Terry, The Oregonian
Friday February 27, 2009, 3:21 PM
One traffic stop on Interstate 5 uncovered a bounty of cocaine: more than 50 pounds worth.
Oregon State Police said three men were arrested Thursday after the cocaine was uncovered in their silver Mazda with the help of a drug-sniffing dog.
They were northbound north of Woodburn in the rental when they were stopped on a suspected DUII in failing to maintain one lane, OSP said.
The three men -- driver Joel Lucian Ruelas-Castro, a 31-year-old from Mexico; and passengers Manuel Alberto Castro Lugo, 38, of Mexico; and Rigo Humberto Lamas-Ponce, a 29-year-old from Southeast Portland -- were put in Marion County Jail on drug allegations. All three have immigration holds, OSP said.
The 51 pounds of cocaine has a value of about $700,000, OSP said.
----
Maybe a cocaine bust is a big news there in Oregon, but such things happen all the time here in Jersey. However, as a journalist myself, I can see this reporter grossly missed what's really unusual in the story: how the hell did THREE crooks fit in a TWO-seater?

NEVER consent to a search without a warrant or stated probable cause!!
or so my lawyer friend told me last night while we watched a dude get pulled over and open his trunk like a fool.

While I agree with you Matt, the police dog granted officers at the scene probable cause for the search that resulted in capture of stated narcotics. The bad guys were going down for DUI anyway, and in some juris-my-dictions a DUI stop is ground for legal search.
