Dont do it.

Oh come on now that's just mean.

What's your guys go to Subaru forum. Most google searches that I do about Subaru's point me to nasioc and I've read good stuff there. Anywhere else I should spend some time at?

I've noticed the amount of Subaru+Miata owners is uncanny. I need more basic FAQ knowledge though. I know my basic stuff but need to dig deeper before I consider purchasing.

step
1) put leafy on ignore
2) compression/leakdown every single one you think of buying
3) make sure it's legit and unmolested (this is harder than it sounds)
4) do all maint
5) replace oil pickup tube
6) get a proper tune (cannot stress this enough)
7) enjoy

everything past that is not a necessity, but a luxury

Maybe the STi would be different but the OMG dream car from my childhood thing and ZOMG AWD wore off pretty quickly with the wrx. Its still kind of fun in the snow. But the rest of the time I pay the loan payment and think of all the better things I could have done with the 11k I paid for the car. Like buying a cheapish NB and a shitty winter beater wagon/sedan/mini truck that I could also use if I needed to haul more than what miata can.

The gas mileage is crap, spare parts are sometimes expensive, any strut/spring combo is going to be 600-1k more money than the miata equivalent and the stock struts ride just as bad as miata showas, and no matter what you do suspension wise its still going to drive like a big heavy pig of a car.

This is MUCH harder than it sounds. I drove about 5-6 different 02-06 WRXs in various stages of molestation until I actually bought mine from 18psi

The temptation to modify these cars is very VERY high, and honestly, its easy to do. Unfortunately its very difficult, in my opinion, to do it right.

I see where you are coming from. I'll take that into account. Right now I'm deciding between turning my truck into something I can DD (would probably involve cummins swap and frame off resto) or picking up a Subaru.

To be honest I've never driven an STi or WRX. Only looked at them. I probably need to test drive anything I look at. Did one of the hawk eye STi's have transmission issues? Or was one stronger than the other?

What about hawk eye STi vs newer WRX. Are they comparable? The looks would never be what I wanted but maybe the car is better?

or buy one with a proper transmission (the 4eat's are garbage)

and aidan,
when you say hawkeye, you're talking about 2 years, and between those years there are quite a few changes, so read up on them and figure out which exact one you "want".

help us help you by doing the basic search first

Mine's a 5EAT, never had an ounce of trouble with it till now. Didn't know jack all about Subaru's when I bought it, but tried to find a manual. Low mileage Manual outback XT limited's in black, that are NOT MODDED/ABBUSED are beyond rare when I looked in 2011. After 2 months, I bought a 70K mile one owner dealer maintained outback XT Limited in black, auto.

Oh trust me I'm not hating on your car or decision. They're really comfy and convenient in a daily when you don't want to worry about shifting.

I'm just saying it sucks because 1) it won't hold more than about 300wtq and likely not even that much 2) subaru slushboxes are just not something designed for any sort of performance. sluggish, not very well calibrated, unresponsive, etc.

I'd rock an auto obxt if I found a pristine one for a killer deal too

07 has aux port and 06 doesn't. Yusss definitely want that one.

Lol alright I've started reading I'm sure I'll be back with more questions.

Agreed on the slugish part! They are that for sure, opposite of what I want in that regard. Once I get the new trans in and the car back on the road, I want to try experimenting a bit to improve the shifting.

I found a document online that shows line pressure vs temp, line pressure is increased at lower trans temps so it will shift right (otherwise is would shift slow/slip cause fluid is so thick when cold). So they ramp up line pressure when cold so it shifts like "normal" and ramp it down as it warms up so it shifts the same, hot or cold.

But mine shifts a bit firmer when cold, it's noticeable. It actually shifts like it should!

The trans has 2 temp sensors, both simple 2 wire thermosistors. I want to try adding a variable potentiometer (10 cent part) in series or parallel and try adjusting the "temp" once hot to see if I can in fact increase line pressure to speed up/firm up shifts.

Will try this after it's running again but if it helps at all, that would be awesome and basically free/easy.

So as far as I can tell gearing is slightly different. Mostly allowed a quicker quarter mile because of no more need to shift to 5th.

-07 has a shittier stock tune, but responds better to an aftermarket tune.

-Different/Better? turbo. Larger wastegate

-Read this somewhere but not sure I believe it, it was disputed and no clear answer came out in the thread:
Its not the tunes fault 07 pistons crack its that they are hypereutectic not forged like the 04-06 and 09 and up

-Aux port

-Different rear sway bar

-Ringland issue? Though this has also been attributed to the shitty stock tune.

-Topfeed injectors (better if I want to build it at some point)

Should I be worried about a higher (100kish) mileage car that has been on a stock tune its whole life?

Everything seems kind of small improvements, pretty standard with a new model year.

So I guess my perfect car would be 07 with stock suspension, exhaust, and tune. But I would probably also settle for an 06 with the same stuff.

What mods should I shy away from? I see a lot of cars on CL with long mod lists for not that much more but I assume I should be worried about them being abused or messed with. But is there any obvious "go-away" mods?

Also whats with all the stage 1, 2, 3 talk. I always thought that was ricer speak but it seems to be the way everyone references their build.

Seems like there are a lot fewer DIYers on the subaru forums, is it more pay to play? Or do I just need to find the right places/resources. Is tuning harder than megasquirt to do yourself?

Lots of questions

I've bought used cars several times over the years, and I have a rule I personally do not break: Only buy a used car that is 100% stock, never modified, and has been well maintained, and preferably low mileage for its age. Unfortunately this makes finding a car a lot more difficult/time consuming, but in the end, it results in a happier, reliable, and more enjoyable experience. I've watched friends by modded cars and later find out why they got such a good deal.... NOPE!

I'll keep that in mind. Over time I'm sure I will be happier if I buy it 100% stock. I'll know more when finances are finalized but I know what you mean.
