need to buy a new computer...what lasts the longest?
I'm looking at a Lenovo IdeaPad Y510, because there was a power surge in my hotel last night and my computer won't post now. I've heard lenovo is the bomb.com for reliability and lasting forever. Hopefully this will be covered on my homeowner's policy.

I'm assuming you are talking laptop. I've been using dell laptops since 1999, initially because that's what the GOV bought us. Seldom had one break on me. I've owned 3 dell laptops since 2002 and never had any issues with any off them except I had a hard drive crap out on me once. They shipped me a new one pretty quick. I have found that their customer service is not that great from dealing with them on other products.

I've had three dell laptops and they've been excellent. A bit on the heavy side and the construction is not up to the same standards as IBM/Lenovo. The laptop I'm using now is a 15" Macbook Pro, and I love it. Compact light and reliable. A little on the spendy side, but top notch hardware. MacOS isn't as horrible as it used to be, takes a little getting used to but works well and is stable.

Wow, not what I was thinking. I've seen a ton of toshiba and dell notebooks die at work, so I'm staying away from them. Gateway is the worst I've seen on hardware at work. However, we had a few hundred toshibas die within a few months of each other.
I'm only going to use the computer for internet and megasquirt, but I want a widescreen. Basically, as long as it has 1gb of ram, widescreen, and a wireless card, I'll be fine. I'd like a big hdd, but I have a 1TB external drive to use too.

love x 50 my fujitsu for its size, weight, performance, and sexual good looks.
Lenovos are fugly as sin. look like a bunch of random black plastic thrown at an LCD. plus they put the left CTRL key in the wrong place.

In the last 4 years I have owned - Dell, compaq, apple, toshiba, and IBM.
Out of all of those hands down the IBM is the best in every way. Battery life, build quality, and reliability. There is a reason why colleges recommend them, and companies hand them out to everyone. They simply are just that damn good. Personally I am never going get anything other then an IBM. I have also played with the rebranded IBM's now Lenovos and they are the same as the trusted IBM's I have used.
My X60s for example. 2 years old, used almost everyday and in my car. Still gets 8 hours of battery life like clock work and is still in the same pristine condition as I bought it with no special treatment.
Also there is nothing that comes close to the awesomeness of the IBM Thinkvantage program.
Yea, I am an IBM *****, but with good reason.
Edit: I wouldnt get an Idea Pad, they are like Dells Vosotro line. Basically the bottom of the barrel. Spend extra on the T, R, X series and it will last forever.

I'm in IT and my company has provided me with 2 T series Lenovos that have been rock solid and take a beating. If I needed a reliable Windows or -NIX machine I wouldn't hesitate. Plain, boring appliance but reliable.
That said, I bought an iBook in 2004 and haven't touched any of my 5 PCs at home since except for racing SIMS. I bought a Powerbook from a board member here in February and it's also been fabulous. Solid, stable, and aesthetically pleasing. Plus I can play in OSX, Windows, and the underlying UNIX shell if I want. Haven't tried it with the 'Squirt yet but the new ones can boot Windows natively (not VM) so they should be fine.
Buy a used T-61 if you want cheap and solid.
