Great job on the race! I recently got in the Strava top 10 on a local climb, out of 300 riders That was a nice surprise.

Thanks... after having an MTB with a dropper I pretty much can't ride without one. Bits of the track looked like this... Hard to ride with a seat up your *** and all dizzy from pedaling hard for 3+ hours.

Can't believe I never saw this thread before. I started out in 2014 on a TREK Xcaliber 6 which was nice. I wanted to upgrade some things and then found a used 2015 FUEL EX9 29er this year and drove 6 hours each way to get a killer deal. Basically has everything I wanted and more including a pretty awesome Reactiv rear shock from Fox, Fox air fork (only 32mm but its fine for my riding for now), stealth dropper post, tubeless setup, XT brakes and a sram 1x11 drivetrain. The wheels are also wider so I might even be able to get 2.4 tires all around, but the 2.3 on it now are beefy anyway and im sure a 2.4 in the front only would also be nice. Last year my fiancee wanted a bike but not that much. This year she kind of got the itch again so I got her a 2017 Skye S 650b. She likes it, and even I can fit on the smaller frame and it feels a bit different so I'll be riding it as well. Only thing I don't like on it are the bargain bin mechanical disc brakes, so they will be the first thing to go once she starts going a little faster.

I love this bike, and for $1,500 for last year's model, it was nice. Yes the new one has Boost and the mino link, but $4,000 was out of the question. I looked at used remedy 29ers but they were also closer to $2,000. I had originally only wanted to spend 1,000 anyway lol

Thoughts on Canyon coming to the USA? I probably won't buy one, hopefully it makes bicycles cheaper in general.

If you convert the Euro to Dollars, you can get an aero frame with one-piece composite bars, post, Mavic 50mm composite wheels and 6870 Di2 for $4200 on the Canyon site. That bike is $6-7k anywhere else.

Yeah. YT and Commencal are doing awesome in the US with direct sales already. Same quality bikes for about 60% the price of a Trek or Specialized. Pretty sweet deal for an enthusiast who can manage the sizing and assembly of a mail-order bike.

YT https://us.yt-industries.com/
Commencal Commencal : Bike, Frames, Parts, Textile, Outlet, Second Hand....

If I am 180lbs with gear, what should I set my shock pressure to as a starting point? I think i have it around 180psi right now but am getting about 25-30% sag, but more concerningly I am blowing through all my travel. Should I try it at 200?

Shut up Dave... support your local bike shop.

In all reality YT, Commencal, Evil, et al are pretty awesome bikes, but they are proving to be very difficult for customers to get a hold of. Since Gwin, YT has been on permanent sold-out status.

Curious to see rider support and warranty procedure for those companies if/when something happens. FWIW I used to be an Evil/Commencal dealer before they went consumer-direct model. Haven't dealt with YT.

Yeah, sorry... just seems like the LBS is slowly going to die no matter what. True YT's are hard to get, but instantly selling every bike you make should be a sign that they have a good product at a good price.

Good read Emilio.

I'm operations manager at Mojo, a huge service shop, so I can echo the opinions in that article.

Now I kinda want to try a Canyon.

That's the little spacer I was talking about! So I'll order that and try it out. In the meantime, maybe I'll add 10psi to the shock and see what happens. Isn't it rated for a max of like 300psi?
What's different between the spacers, by that I mean which one is designed for what. I see there is a 3cc difference, I take it if they make them so close in cc to each other that the difference between the two is more than subtle. 180psi with a spacer sound like a decent start point?

I'm not buying a bike I can wheel around a crit course and ride for an hour or so,even a cheap one. That's how the Stigmata happened, why I didn't buy a Venge nor a Cervelo. It's just too much money to throw down for a relationship with a machine which will last years.

I'd like to see it bring prices down though, of course.

Unrelated:

I'm at a well known biker stop bakery/cafe in Encinitas, Pannikin a week or so ago, midweek. Encinitas is a rich community, tons of triathletes and cyclists. New 2016 Specialized S-Works Venge Vias Di2 out front. This is a state of the art $13,000 race bike.
It has:
funky risers to raise bars like 3"
smartphone holder with smartphone the size oh Kansas on it
Bell - swear to god
top tube bag, randonneur style
fat 25 or maybe 28c punture resistant tires. I'm sure the LBS mechanic accepted the schweet S-Works turbo's in exchange
compact cranks because girl riding it isn't Belgian or male
OEM power meter gone
Cr-Mo rail Terry gel saddle about a mile wide for said non Belgian male behind
Saddle bag that could swallow a double cheeseburger and large order of fries, and probably has
Giant headlight
Giant tail light jerry rigged on carbon aero seat post
bars cranked up so hoods are closer to rider

For those of you reading this and shrugging, it's sorta like buy a Mclaren P1, adding a tow hitch, roof racks, pep boys bug deflector, wood bead seat covers, pep boys texturized steering wheel cover and.. hub caps.

Basically set up like a commuter for a non cyclist. I'm sure the gal walked into the LBS with more money than sense and asked for "the best bike" they have and they set her up accordingly. I have always said that I'm thankful for these riders. They subsidize F1 level tech for us working plebes.
Should have taken a picture.
