Emilio and I chatted a bit yesterday about bicycles and I sent him this email, but it's a pretty good start to our thread.

Basically, my bicycles and how I became obsessed with them in 2-months:
Johnwag bought a Cervelo tri-bike and told me he was selling this (Cannondale SM600 from 1986) and it became my pit-bicycle for $100:
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1368209706
I plan to get a carbon fork, find a rear brake for it, then powder-coat it "Guinness foam tan" with simple, black lettering. For the record, I would have gone with "Left Hand Nitro Milk Stout foam tan" but it's lighter in color, although a superior beer.

Then, after riding that Cannondale I bought from John for about thirty minutes, I realized that I needed to give road biking a try and I found this 54cm Cannondale Crit bike:
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1368209706
Yes, it's Mariner Blue and that had a huge influence on my impulse buy. It looks tiny and with a 25mm set-back seat post it will fit better, it's just ultra tight and old-school. My GF will ride it for a while and when she graduates from it, I will refinish and make it a beer-bike with flat-bars.

After riding that Mariner Blue for 250 miles, I broke my promise to wait until summer and started shopping bikes because I realized that crit-bike was awful for endurance training and I started shopping Bianchi bikes because they are pornographic. Didn't/don't have a lot of cash and could get laid off soon, so it was important to get an awesome bike to ride around on if I became unemployed, lol. I was pretty much sold on this which was $1600 and a pretty big investment for me. However, I discovered this Sette Vitale 1.0 bike that was $969 shipped and came with Shimano 105 controls/F&R derailers/cassette/crank/brakes and 1700g wheels. That was clearly better than the Bianchi or the CAAD10 I was interested in, so I bought it.

...and that's one of the best purchases I've made in my life. I keep looking at bike porn, but I'll probably never replace it. I am not vulnerable to carbonlust and I don't care about pedigree, so I see no reason to upgrade. I suppose I could be talked-into a Russ Denny SS bike, but I'd probalbly just get a $99 Sette or Nashbar frame if there were ever a problem.

Then, I've always wanted to mountain bike and I was getting sent to Ruidoso in NM and wanted to be sure I took advantage of this because it's basically a free vacation since I didn't have meetings everyday including the weekends. So I bought this Cannondale SL2 29er. I basically wanted the cheapest 29er HT I could get with hydro disc and a Rockshox fork. I was all checked-out and leaving with my black SL2, then I spied this awesome Mariner Blue colored bike and said..."Excuse me, I need to exchnage this bike for that one in the awesome color". hehe

It turns out the brake levers are terrible but I'm still happy with the purchase and got some of this action:

Easily the best impluse buy of my life.

Is the threat of bannination really your best retort?

Specialized Rockhopper. It's not exactly baller, but it does nicely. Haven't done anything to it but replace the pedals:

Two of them were so cheap I couldn't avoid buying them. The first bike was $100, the second bike was $200,. how do you say no to that? The other two were cheap by bicycle standards, expensive by Miata standards, and they are modern equipment.

I foresee myself getting into CX.

You and JoeP keep your fat kid bikes out of this thread, this thread is for man power.

My newest setup, it's got a carbon rear triangle. The lateral rigidity is amazing, I love this thing.

+1

I just rode Ruidoso at 6400-6700' and it was fucking devastating since I'm accustomed to 400' in Dallas. Fucking devastating.

Nice man, altitude is killer. The base of my rides start at 7200' and i usually end up 9k+. There's some trails near the local ski area that start around 10k elevation. I rode my bike to wheeler peak last summer, and plan on doing it again. Well honestly a lot of it was hiking going up, 100% riding going down though.

Annnd now I realize how out of shape I am for this year, need to get working on it.

Motherfuck pedaling in Wheeler. Even after two weeks I was sucking/felching my malt through a straw on the way back to the hotel and I was winded, lol.

BTW, back when Contador was doping he climbed 12% grade in the TdF...in the big ring.

fun fact: my dad worked for Amgen, who make Epogen (EPO, Erythropoietin)

hustler, you want some? :giggle:

Jesus man, some people are just sick. You've hiked wheeler? That's rad, I'm proud of you. When did you do it? It was probably before the new trail was present, eh? The new one is definitely easier, but still a feat none the less.

Another good mtb trail is "bull of the woods" and you end up on gold hill. It's epic, you overlook red river from the Taos side, a view you can only get via hiking a mountain or flying in a plane.
