I got an android about 11 months ago. Finally did my first cool thing with it last night (playing Angry Birds or Hungry Shark doesn't count) which was figure out how to get it tethered to my laptop for internet access. I never was able to make it work with Vista, but with Win7 it set up pretty easily. My neighborhood's been without DSL service for about a week, but now I'm rockin' sprint 3G. Speed test is showing 1 down and .3 up compared to DSL at 1.2 down and .25 up, so that's pretty much the same speed. Last time DSL went down in the area, it was out for over 3 weeks. Yikes! I'm going to add a line to my plan and use the new phone for at home falldown and mobile internet access. At $20/mo for a new line (and no cost for the phone), it's significantly less expensive than using Clear or Virgin mobile broadband.

I've never had a "stupid" phone. My first phone was a Palm Treo 180. I've always had Palm phones due to their great integration of the phone features. At first they were just PDAs that made phone calls, but now they do both very well. They really just need some new hardware and more developer support. My Pre is super hacker friendly, but there aren't many apps I'd bother paying $ for. I have about 40 homebrew patches to customize and add features to the OS. At 1ghz, it runs really well.
