Those VA deer sure are brave. You never see a deer out in the open in daylight around here. They know these rednecks will blow them to pieces.

A snapshot from fishing this morning. Fish weren't biting so I looked for something to shoot. Wish I had a longer lens. I had to do a really tight crop from my 40mm as they wouldn't get any closer than about 50'.

I like that first one of the family with the dog, and I really like the black and white doors.

My critique on the first one:
I wish there was a little more of a story in the photo, as the family is not doing anything obvious like having a picnic, or playing fetch. I sort of like the blurred frame on the sides suggesting that the photographer is absolutely not part of the scene, but it is almost too much, giving a bit of a stalker feel. I think the lighting is good; bright but not washed out. It is not dramatic, but that is not what that picture is about.

Critique on the doors:
I really love the symmetry and contrast here. The white door frame is bright next to the black shutters but detail is not lost in either one. The pattern in the doors is very nice and gives them a texture that a lot of similar photos lack. The roof thatching, lines in the shutters, and even the sculptures lead your eye to the center of the photo, and there is enough in the photo to look at without it being "busy" and distracting.

It has been a while since I have written any proper critiques, so forgive me if they aren't very good. I like a lot of the other photos as well, but I just picked a couple to write about.

Visited the Aquarium in Atlanta before flying back to RI. I waited till the room cleared out to capture some shots, then a kid came screaming in and jumped into the frame. Such enthusiasm to see a whale shark. The second kid was just haphazardly snapping shots of everything.

both are great shots and would be boring without the kids. really well done.

id personally clone the shark on the top-right, and maybe the two ray on the right edge, out of the first shot.

I took this one further:



You use LR? I started with the Ultimate Fighter Preset.

Basically it's ramping up the clarity slider and applying some split toning, and then went from there. I added back in saturation and deepened the shadows, then I added a heavy vignette. I also brought it into Portraiture (a skin smoothing/retouching program) and applied another preset to it to further increase the contrast and add more drama.

These are all two-light shots with a reflector. I think all the shots are from each different type of setup--this last here is clamshell lighting. I shot it at f/8 because I wanted that concrete wall in focus to add texture/grunge and the end-result on these is close to what I was envisioning: I wanted a creepy shot of Lars holding the turbo with dramatic lighting.

The IQ in that shot viewed at full resolution is utterly insane. Was shot with the Tamron 70-200 2.8 VC.
