My harebrained theory is that the FIA wants to too much from the teams. Oh, make a kickass car according to this formula. Okay, now limit the revs. Okay, now publish your starting weight. Okay, now help develop new technologies like KERS. Okay, now make your engines last longer. Okay, now don't use the wind tunnel so much. Okay, now don't test as much. Okay, now work inside a predetermined budget... Something's gotta give!
At this hour it looks like the FIA is going to try to sue the seceding teams. Sigh. All they want is for their voice to be heard when the rules are written and for the FIA to stay out of their pocketbooks.
Hmm...

Wow... Considering that the teams in the FOTA are the whos-who of F1 now and several years into the past, that statement carries some significant weight. Whether or not it is a bluff for more bargaining power or a genuine intent of secession remains to be seen. But if I was Ecclestone, I would be at least a bit concerned. If the FOTA members all split, F1 is screwed.
How in the hell would F1 fill the grid with a bunch of good, well funded teams? If it happens, I predict Tata Motors will win the Constructors Championship in 2010 after a close battle with Team Kia and Team Chen Shin. The Tata lead car will be driven by Jeff Gordon The second Tata car will be driven by Tanner Foust
I wonder what the tire manufacturers are all thinking right now... I would guess FOTA would open up the series to multiple manufacturers and more compound choices.
Kinda reminds one a bit of the CART-IRL split eh? IRL came out on top on that one despite predictions to the contrary.

F1 will have dentists driving in their series too if they keep going forward with Max's plan.

IRL came out on top compared to CART.
Do not read too much into my analogy. Things are a lot different. IRL split to form a low-cost spec series with better accessibility. So people buying their rides was kind of the point.
