When I was a teenager and knew no better, a popular "upgrade" for the VW Beetle engine was to replace the tired old factory distributor with a Bosch "009", which was a centrifugal-advance-only unit originally intended for stationary industrial engines. No vacuum advance at all.
This was fine for drag racers, but the dumbest thing imaginable on the street. We were literally running full retard all the time, and yet even seemingly knowledgeable shops happily sold and installed these all day long.

I wish that someone back then had taken the time to slap me upside the head and explain to me exactly why vacuum advance was a good thing, and why I was a compleat idiot for mindlessly following the crowd and bolting parts to my car without actually understanding their function.

Stupid green car taught me things though.
and since people still are like "bosch 009 FTW LOLOLOL" try finding a vacuum advance dist. for a decent price. Then, I bought the 300 or what ever dollar Mallory...and it didnt fit. Thats when I decided to really say screw that car.
pic for reference

Did you wind up selling it?
Years later, I figured out what 009s were good for. Lock down the advance mechanism, replace the points with a twin-sensor optical plate (like a 4G63 CAS) and connect a MS to it.
Wow, I forgot about that poor guy.

I fried a MS trying to get some programmable timing on that thing.
