Hotrod Magazine tries to find the weak link in a stock $500 5.3 iron (truck) junkyard/rusty cylinder LS bottom end. Reworked original cylinder heads, fancy intake mani, comp cam, makes 451hp/380ft-lb crank NA (on original bottom end*). Then they add a couple churbos and start upping the boost until something goes boom. Ends up doing ~60 dyno pulls under boost, stopping at 1,203 hp at 26.8 psi before "running out of dyno time" and NOT blowing anything up. Disassemble block to find it's actually a 4.8l.

*they also decrease top ring gap from .015" to .029".
The article that got my ***** all tingly was the 5.3 they strapped a single chinacharger on to make like 594hp while spending $3,252...

http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/e...lock_for_3252/

Didn't really feel like being too specific, but this was why I started a "what would you build with a V8" thread..

How did they up the ring gap and not realize that they were working with a 4.8L?

That's what I thought initially too. Maybe they found out then but figured it'd make a better article if they say it was a 5.3, then dropped another bomb saying it's actually a 4.8.

they are different by stroke length, are they not? that's not easy to "see" by looking at a ring.

4.8 L (290 cu in) 96.01 mm bore and 83 mm stroke. The Vortec 4800 produces 270 horsepower to 295 horsepower and 285 lbfft to 305 lbfft depending on the model year and application.

5.3 L 96.01 mm bore and 92.00 mm stroke. Is a stroked (by 9 mm) version of the Vortec 4800 and replaced the 5700 L31. Power output is 285-300 hp and torque is 335 lbfft to 350 lbfft.

I'd say if you had a 4.8 and 5.3 side by side you might be able to spot the difference, otherwise doubt it. They use the same block.

Now, the 9-4x with GM's twinturbo 2.8 V6 is gonna be a fun ride I think. 300hp/295tq They need to stick that engine in the new regal GS with AWD (AKA Opel Insignia OPC) and call it Grand National. Any color as long as it's black. Too bad that'll never happen, and even if it did it'd be too much money. A decked out Regal GS with it's turbo 4cyl/FWD is only a thou or so under a Taurus TT AWD V6 SHO. GM FTL again.

I want this:

Appears the 97Aero is ineed a TB-SS AWD.

If you're not talking about a Corvette, truck, or the occasional Cadillac GM has been absolute FAIL for almost 30 years now so that isn't really a big surprise to me. Afterall, they've had such great Gems over the last 25 years:

Don't forget about the Camaro's Replacement:

Jesus, I had actually forgotten how many different vehicles they made that were pure garbage...

But aren't a lot of GM crap made in Mexico, whereas a lot of 'foreign' crap is made in USA?

My dad loves Chryslers, I tried to tell him the Caravans are made in Canada (and I believe some Chryslers are made in Mexico) but he doesn't (want to) believe me.
Also, the new 300 looks ugly, and the rear of the new charger looks like it's from an old concept car. I'd have a Viper, Jeep or a Ram, thats it.

The limitation on those motors, from what I understand is the strength of the heads.... A good friend of mine had a 1400-1600 hp turbo motor that was a 6.0 block w/ the good heads, can't remember which ones they were, but stock as in $900 a pair from the dealership or so.... I think they had a stroker crank, but the bottom end wasn't crazy built up.... They went through a couple of sets of stock heads (they were cracking around the bolts) before they gave up on the setup..... An LS motor w/ a turbo will make 1k hp all day long for a long time, more if you can find good enough heads The bottom ends are just unreal strong.... 6 bolt mains anyone?

If you want to talk about GM, Ford, and Chrysler over the last 30 years.. I'd walk before owning 98% of Chrysler products in that time period. Can't believe I'm actually shopping for Mid to late 90s Chrysler made Jeep... I've always hated the 300C. Katt Williams nailed that one, cheap ripoff of a Rolls, until you see it next to a real Rolls then its just a busted *** Dodge. If I had a time machine I'd go back to 1980s and kidnap whoever created the minivan and lock them in a closet for 30 years. ******* HATE minivans and all their douchenozzle drivers..

There are Fords built in Mexico, too. What about the eurotrash Ford is dumping on us now? You know, these two ******* *** ugly TURDS:

All the while Japanese, German, and Swedish vehicles are built here in 'Merica..

In fairness, the Grand National and Monte Carlo SS deserve an honorable mention. Were they the highest-quality vehicles ever made? Well, no. But as the Last Dying Gasp of the muscle car era, they were fun.
