So I'm in the process of moving right now. Got most of the stuff moved, haven't really unpacked, and I'm staring at this huge 55" 4:3 CRT rear-projection TV which I've had for the past 12 years, and which I keep swearing I will never move again, and yet keep hauling around with me on the basis that it still works just fine. It's now in its seventh home, and I have literally never had one single problem with it. It's just huge, heavy, and the wrong aspect ratio.

I just got back online with the neighbor's unsecured wifi, and I'm browsing around looking at LED/LCD TVs in the 55-60" range. I happened across one el-cheepo brand called Sigmac, offered by none other than Wal-Mart. Now, I'm not seriously considering buying it, but something stuck me as odd. I googled Sigmac and found their website, which sort of infers that the TV was made in the USA. Well, more than infer, really- it actually says "Product of USA." Last time I saw that on a piece of electronic equipment, it had a guidance system and a detonator.

Thing is, the website doesn't strike me as something that was created by an American, or even a native speaker of English. More like a Chinese high-school student who doesn't know the difference between the US and the UK.

I'll let the website speak for itself:

I'm oddly attracted to that television.

Sigmac is legit... if ur into the absolute bottom of the barrel startup brand:
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Who_makes_sigmac_tvs

More research reveals that ALL parts are made in china, including the cardboard boxes they're shipped in. The only things that are done in the USA are applying whatever stickers go on the outside of the box that are specific to a retailer.

Review of their 15" model:

Amazon reviews aren't terrible... ie, grain of salt:

How much cheaper, Joe? I sweated over what TV to buy for ages. My brother finally told me to just go buy one, because "while you're agonizing over 50 bucks, the welfare queen is enjoying the TV that she bought by selling food stamps at 60 cents on the dollar."

I really love my Panasonic plasma. I got it thru Wally world, shipped to store.

There are so many -----ing options for tv's. I bought my 32" 1080p led/lcd for 250 shipped with a one year no questions asked warranty. Sending it back, though. It's developed a small line and the HDMI doesn't "shake hands" with my PS3

Gonna get credit for it and spend an extra 50 bucks on a sharp or something of the same size.

Choosing a TV depends heavily on your intended usage and environment.

Joe, I picked up a 47" Vizio XVT3D474SV and love it. Yes it's a 3D but I don't need that. It's a full array local dimming set. Unbelievable blacks since they shut down the LEDs in the array of 160 that aren't used.

They make a 55". XVT3D554SV ... but I haven't seen either for sale for a while and I dont know what the replacement is. the previous version is the XVT553SV.

Joe, go for a Panasonic Viera with a G20 engine.

That's all I am going to say.

Ok, that makes sense. Industry is about 140km northeast of here, in inland LA county. It's a little jerkwater town with nothing but a bunch of warehouses, and a lot of the companies that do importation from Asia are based there. Its only redeeming quality is that the Twin Pines mall, where Doc Brown sent a large dog one minute into the future, is there.

Like I said, I have no intention of buying one. I just found the website hilarious. It does seem like pretty blatent false advertising. I wonder, if I go to WallyWorld and look at the box- will it say "Made in USA" or "Made in China"?

How much cheaper than what? It's $899 at WM, same as any low-end non-LED 55" model.

Maybe they'll turn out fine. I mean, 5 years ago who the hell was Visio? Now they're everywhere.

I'll tell you what's really funny, though. All of a sudden, it seems like we're starting to see cheap, Chinese TVs show up with names like "RCA" and "Emerson" on them. When the heck did RCA come back to life, and what makes anybody think that slapping the name of a dead US company on their product is going to make people want to buy it? RCA TVs were crap even back when they were being made by RCA.

No gaming. Just watching movies / television programs, often older content originated from "classic" source media replete with analog noise, from a straight-on viewing angle in a room free of direct, incident sunlight.

In other words, the exact usage and environment that a rear-projection CRT is best at, which is why I bought it in the first place and why I've not felt compelled to replace it apart from those times when I have to push it uphill into a moving truck.

I meant how much cheaper than any name brand model. I suppose someone has to be one of the first to buy off brand stuff, otherwise it will never become name brand. After all, LG was garbage back when I was growing up getting older. Now they're pretty good stuff.

But, there is a certain point where cheaper is not always better. I don't plan on buying another 48" TV anytime soon, so I bought one that I was pretty sure I could trust to last for a while.

I second the Panny Viera. I did a lot of research when I bought my 65ST30 and you get the best bang for your buck out of them. Break it in and calibrate it and the picture is damn near perfect. There are only a handful of sets better and they cost 2-4x as much.
