Uhm, no. Cursor keys were the first combo used for character control if you consider Wolfenstein 3D to be the first FPS. It is generally agreed to be the first "modern" FPS, however it was by no means the first game which allowed the character to move around through the game environment and shoot things, while displaying the playfield from the point of view of the character.

Some would argue that Seawolf (1976) was the first "real" FPS, and while it does technically qualify as one (you look through a periscope from the perspective of the sub captain who would be commanding the torpedoes to be fired), it did not support movement of the character through the environment- your sub was essentially stationary.

Maze War (c. 1973) and Phantom Slayer (1982) were technically first-person perspective, but restricted movement to corridors and did not really permit true freedom of movement.

Personally, I call Battlezone (1980) the first FPS. It was ported to several personal computers starting in 1982-1983.

What I can't remember is what the controls were. I'm pretty sure that the C64 and Atati builds used the same twin joystick control as the arcade machine, however I don't think the DOS port did, particularly as having two joysticks connected to an x86-class machine was extremely rare, and having even one joystick was not especially common until well into the soundcard-era, which is how most people of the time got gameports on their machines in the first place.

Sidebar: Earlier today, I clicked an ad linking me to a copy of the current Wired magazine. I didn't realize that the ad would take me straight to where I could buy a copy of the magazine through Apple's iTunes service, which is what made the front cover of the magazine all the more humorous.

Here is a direct screencap, from the iTunes store:

Sidebar II: Stellar 7 was a cool game. That is all.

Joe you just named fifty FPS I didn't even know existed. I thought Golden Eye was the first FPS on N64, in 1997. Shows how young I TRULY am.

You do realize that hes a character actor right?
The things he says and do are him acting as a fictional character he invented. Those are not his real views or his true personality.

Really, I had no idea that he was an actor.

From wikipedia <G>:
"Although, by his own account, he was not particularly political before joining the cast of The Daily Show, Colbert has described himself as a Democrat according to a 2004 interview.
In an interview at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard Institute of Politics, he stated that he has "no problems with Republicans, just Republican policies".

All I am saying is that he has a rather large soapbox and speaks to a certain group of impressionable people. Some get their "facts" from him which are twisted to support a certain viewpoint. I have no problem at all with any of that. What I do have a problem with is when you spew a certain viewpoint for 8 years under one administration and then do a 180 when "your guy" gets into office. That's all I was saying. Well, except for wishing for more comedians to leave the politics behind. It gets old when every single stand up comedian throws a "Bush/Fox lies" or "Palin is stupid" joke in their routine.

I know I have thin skin on this so I will do my best to leave the politics behind in this thread from now on. Sorry for the detour.

Oh, you mean kinda like "Papa Bear" Bill O'Reilly, except how Colbert is on COMEDY CENTRAL (obviously not a news network), whereas O'Reilly is on FOX "NEWS", which has "news" in the title. Watch the Colbert Report, it makes fun of both sides, it's a comedy show based on current events and politics, how is he supposed to leave the politics behind?
ps, Fox lies, Palin is a moron and the only good reason that anyone to vote for her is morbid curiosity. And she's hot, I'll give her that.

Yes, I realize the onion is a joke network.

Do. Want.

Was faster than the C6 Z06s around the course and had a 6.7 liter aluminum head Pontiac V8. Notice the fuel cell in trunk pic.
