Cool man, that looks pretty awesome!

My cheap *** bought a scope over the weekend for my Savage MKII-FVSR finally. Went to the Bushnell outlet store to checkout some different deals they had, appears they might be discontinuing their Simmons line? Didn't have any new Simmons products out on display but I did locate a damaged Retail box Simmons 3-9x40 "8-Point" duplex scope for $20.00. Tore the box open and inspected the scope which looked in great condition, magnification adjustment was very fluid and easy to manipulate and had a clear image. Bought it then visited Cabela's for some $40 rings.

Also in their refurbished section was a box full of $10.00 Bushnell laser bore-sights so I had to pickup one of those after bending up my LaserLyte branded one. Note to self; Don't leave installed in the bore on a bipod and walk away. Heavy rilfe fell over and bent soft aluminum laser stem. Oops.

$60.00 including rings that I could use on a nicer scope if I choose to buy one... I'm satisfied. Now if I can get myself to the range and see how accurate it can be...

A buddy of mine has one of those .22-.50caliber Bushnell boresighters... does the job exactly that you need done. I think he paid around $30 for it, so $10 is probably worth the cost just to have one lying around.

Great buy on that scope. I've decided that I'm looking for bigger magnification. Based on reveiws read and a strong recommendation from Rimfire Central, I may go with this:

Almost forgot... good story.

Helped a buddy move some boxes from his storage unit to his condo the other day. I've known this guy for about 10 years now, wives are friends, good dude.

I was lifting some boxes up onto a shelf in the garage, and when I turned around he was staring at me in a way that made me think he was having a seizure... intense, kinda wild-eyes, unfocused, mouth open, not breathing... STARE.

Him: "Ummm... Sam, is that a gun?"
Me: "Oh, was it showing... guess I was reaching pretty high?"
Him: "Dude, where did you get a gun?"
Me: "I bought this one at Barneys in New Orleans, it's a Glock."

I lifted up my shirt and moved my hand towards it (was just gonna re-adjust from my high reach) and he jumped back like I had Quatto growing out of my side.

Him: "Dude, what are you doing with a gun?"

Again, I've known this guy for years. I don't make it a point of advertising to anybody that I carry, and I can't recall ever discussing firearms with him, but he is totally and completely freaking out. I've never seen hoplophobia like this from anybody. He's genuinely scared of the gun like all the stories I've read.

Me: "Jon, before we talk about why I'm carrying a gun, you've gotta relax a little bit. Dude, it's me. I carry this thing everywhere I go that's not directly to or from the base. It goes on my hip when I wake up and comes off when I go to sleep. In the past 3-4 years, every single time you've seen me out of uniform, there's a 99% chance I was wearing it. I don't advertise that I carry because that's not my style, but I know you know I own some guns... this is one of them. I've got a concealed weapons permit from Florida that is legal in Virginia, and I carry everywhere I go that's legal to do so. Now... we've been friends for a long time, it's me... you wanna talk about why I carry, or are you too freaked out?"

This guy is very smart, a guy I'd trust to fly the ball at night in hurricane... and he comes around almost instantly.

Him: "Wow man, I don't know. Other than the few times at work where we had to qualify, I've never touched a gun. What is it, a Glock?"

Me: "If we're done moving boxes, lets go inside and crack a beer... I'll tell you all about it."

That afternoon, on my recommendation, he signed up for the basic CCW course below. I'm converting them one at a time... amen.

I really should go to my local guys classes and just get mine. Problem is... I'm rarely out of IL (no carry) and when I am... I'm typically briefly in PA (easy to carry there) and then in NJ (I think it is almost as bad as IL?)

So I'd take the class to have it... and be able to use it for a few hours... a few times a year.

I have a lot of friends who come to me for gun-buying advice. Guys who are buying their first gun ALWAYS want a .45, or want to know if there's anything bigger than a .45. I have several versions of "my speech" prepared depending on how they initiate the conversation, but they all revolve around a thorough discussion of the basics of defensive pistolcraft. I talk about size, concealment, draw technique, recoil, point-of-aim, shooting from cover, shooting while moving, and a few other "basics". I've read a few books and still consider myself a complete beginner, but at some point they start to get that "wtf did I just get myself into" look in their eyes and the result is THEY ALL SAY THE EXACT SAME THING...

"Dude, I just want something I can go to the range and make some noise with."

My immediate prepared followup is "You want a .22 revolver. Ruger makes an awsome 6-shooter that will make you feel like John Wayne and will shoot 22magnum. Lotsa bang, very cheap to shoot, chicks love it."

The mere mention of .22 throws such a wrench in their thought process but makes so much sense that it's kinda like a CNTRL-ALT-DELTE. The rest of the conversation goes like the following with variations on a theme:

Him: "Well, what if I have to shoot somebody, isn't a 22 a bit small."
Me: "You said you just wanted a range toy. Do you have any idea how expensive .45 ammo is?"
Him: "Uhh, no, but I kinda want one for security too. My neighbor had his house broken into."
Me: "Then what you want is a 12ga shotgun with a tactical flashlight attached to it"... and immediately start into the pro's and con's of a shotgun vs. pistol for home defense, talking about cover, night-vision, target recognition in the dark, penetration, legal consideration, etc...
Him: "But a shotgun is kinda big, what if I want to take it in the car?"
Me: "So you want a range toy, home defense gun, and travel gun?"
Him: "Uhhh..."
Me: "You're at a gas station at 1am off a major highway, and a couple rough dudes pull up behind you at the pump, get out, and you immediately know they're gonna try and roll you... where's the gun?"
Me: "Don't answer. It's in the locked glovebox and you're dead."

Then I get very serious. I tell them that I take my self defense and the defense of my family very seriously. I never plan on being a victim, but I'm also very aware that losing my wallet is preferable to losing my life. I'm not stupid, but I'll also never enable a criminal by allowing myself to be a victim if there are any other options, and that's why I carry concealed everywhere I go. Then the light goes on.

So we talk about how awesome the G19 is and go from there. The point is that almost everybody you know who doesn't "know guns" has preconceived notions that lead them down a path that never end up where they think they're going.

When a guy asks you what gun he should buy, the only thing on his mind is going to the range with it, taking it in and out of it's case, and putting it back in it's locked box in the closet when he's done. He may say he wants to keep it in his night-stand "just in case", but he's never actually thought about opening the drawer, picking it up, chambering a round, taking the safety off, aiming it without nite-sights, and pulling the trigger after being awake for 10 seconds and seeing that the bad guy also has a gun and is pointing it at him. The only thing he visualizes is shooting paper targets at the range.

Just got BlackOps2, I'm out.

Read this today:

The owner of a gun shop and firearms training facility in small-town Arizona this week posted a sign telling patrons who voted for President Barack Obama to “turn around and leave” because they have proven they “are not responsible enough to own a firearm.” The owner, Cope Reynolds, also took out a full-page ad in the local White Mountain Independent newspaper in an apparent effort to fully drive his point home. “If you voted for Barack Obama your business is NOT WELCOME at Southwest Shooting Authority,” the ad states. “You have proven you are not responsible enough to own a firearm.” The bottom of the ad lists the gun shop’s phone number: 928-367-AK47.

“Of course, it would be impossible to enforce,” Reynolds said in an email to the Phoenix New Times. “However, if they own up to it, we will not serve them.” Reynolds added that, while many in his community and across the country have been supportive, he has received a large amount of hate mail and even a few death threats since enacting his new policy.

Under federal law. private establishments that function as “public accommodations — like a gun shop — can refuse service to anyone as long as they do not discriminate against a protected class, such as disabled individuals. Some states, including California, have more stringent standards that prevent discrimination for arbitrary or malicious reasons.

“I hate it because my 17-year-old son answers the phone, and they light into him,” Reynolds said. “They call us stupid rednecks and racist.” Reynolds reminded potential assassins that he carries a gun with him at all times, and knows how to use it. “We’re able to wear our guns in Arizona and we wear one 24-7,” he said. “We train regularly.” It’s unlikely Reynolds’ move will cost him many customers — his town is heavily Republican — but he claimed that, if he is forced out of business, he won’t have any regrets. “If we lose the whole business it doesn’t matter,” Reynolds said. “The bottom line is my values.”
I lold..

Lube it up really good for the first few hundred rounds. My bolt assembly took about 200 before it would cycle really smooth. I actually took the bolt out every few mags and put a few drops of M-pro 7 to help with the break-in.

Got a hold of (and broke down/cleaned) the first pistol I ever shot. Literally the first, it belonged to my grandfather and I probably first shot it when I was in like first grade?

Beretta Model 70S .22. Really clean, nice looking pistol. Bit annoying to take down as far as I did for its first real cleaning in probably 15yrs. Sadly has pitting all over due to being kept in a small safe that was never aired out or loaded with a dessicant :(.

Can't wait to get out and shot it for old times sake.

Not picture of mine... but this is it:

I got really brave yesterday and decided to attempt zero of my scope with the Aguila Colibri .22's. Took a couple phone books and a beer box, taped an M4 '25 yard zero' target and put it about 45 - 50 feet away from my patio at the base of a 5' diameter tree. Lay out prone on the patio and took careful aim, squeezed the trigger and watched the bullet's entire flight into the cardboard box -- Pretty much sounded like a pellet gun. Laughed and continued.

Managed to get it pretty close to zero for those rounds and ended up with 2 bullets in one hole. Not bad. Fired off about 25 rounds and nobody was the wiser.

Took some pictures of the target with my dslr but can't find a damn usb-mini cable right now, so no pictures for the time being. Interesting note, ordered another 500 rounds of the stuff from Midway's website tonight, which expressly states it's for use in a pistol only.. Also claims 500fps, which might be a bit of a stretch.

I bet they are concerned about squibs. I'd be hyper aware of that myself.

It probably states "pistol use only" because of the significantly higher likelihood of a round not having the energy to get out of the longer rifle barrel

A few posts up Sam actually commented that he didn't have similar luck with the same rounds and the same rifle as I have.. Either way, really glad they work and I'll definitely be aware of the squib issue.

It could be a difference of .0001 barrel tolerance, or the way your rifling is cut, or that particular batch of that particular ammo, or any of another 100 things why the Colibris will exit one rifle and the SuperColibris won't exit another.

Bottom line, every time you open the bolt to load a new round, check for a squib... that is unless the bullet is going so slow you actually saw it fly to the target. Mine were easy... they hit the dirt at 25yds and made a little puff.

I'll try some SuperColibris again in after a few thousand rounds and see what luck I have. In the meantime, I've got a few bricks of CCI Quiets that are only marginally louder, and still not loud enough that your neighbors would ever notice one or two.

Still looking for a scope upgrade...

Looks like I messed up my Midway order but didn't even realize it until tonight...

What I bought at the gun show was Colibri, ordered Super Colibri from Midway:
Colibri:
Technical Information
Caliber: 22 Long Rifle
Bullet Weight: 20 Grains
Bullet Style: Solid Point

Ballistics Information:
Muzzle Velocity: 375 fps
Muzzle Energy: 6 ft. lbs.

Super Colibri:
Technical Information
Caliber: 22 Long Rifle
Bullet Weight: 20 Grains
Bullet Style: Lead Solid

Ballistics Information:
Muzzle Velocity: 500 fps
Muzzle Energy: 11 ft. lbs.

Test fired 2 rounds of Super Colibri vs 2 rounds of Colibri tonight into my patented YellowBeerBox target. To my ear, the Super has more punch and is slightly louder when fired from my Savage FVSR's 16" barrel. All four rounds fired clean.

Going to the shoot-em-up place tomorrow to get one of my AR's new iron sights dialed in. Pretty excited to shoot some real stuff for a few minutes..

Caught my eye... $19 for that Simmons 22mag 4x32 we've been talking about for our 22lr's. Might as well spend $99 and get free shipping. Everybody could use a few more small knives and Chinese 33rd Glock mags. I know that everybody that reads this thread can find $99 worth of stuff they absolutely need at CDNN. They only do their free shipping deal a couple times a year, so grab yo shizz.
