Went to the range today with my friend who is a horrible shot. He took his $2300 Colt Competition AR with brass target ammo and I took my $700 PSA AR with **** Tula ammo. For the first time in the 2-3 years we have been going to the range he out shot me. We were shooting an 8" gong at 200 yards. He was hitting it 6-7 shots out of 10 and I only hit it twice in 30 rounds. My entire rig probably costs less than his scope. So, the question is - if I spend more than $0.25/round on ammo will I once again out shoot him or do I need to put $1000 into the rifle to out shoot him. I figure the ammo is what is holding me back but I wanted a second opinion.

FWIW, I took the Obrez with me. I couldn't hit the 8" gong at 200 yards but I sure scared the hell out of it. Was disappointed but stopped trying after about 15 rounds. Most shots were high right with the sights on the 100 yard mark.

WTF? Your buddy was shooting a scoped centerfire at an 8" gong at 200 yards and actually missed? How the **** do you miss at that distance with a scope... AND with a top-tier gun at that? Is your AR scoped? How were you shooting, standing? Bench? Rest? Bipod?

To help get those groups down... ammo and trigger. Grab a case of anybody's XM193 and massage your trigger a bit, or grab the ALG/JPsprings/JoeBob-screw... the trifecta of cheap and awesome trigger upgrades.

Also, my R700 is for sale here in VA.

Let me repeat - Went to the range today with my friend who is a horrible shot. He took his Cx40 Storm and shot around 40 rounds scoped at 50 yards and probably hit the four 6" splatter targets maybe 5 times. Adjusted the sights every 5 or so shots.

Yes, I have Barska 3-9x42 scope ($80 at Walmart). We were both shooting from a front rest. I've done some trigger work before but I've always understood that a good trigger only helps with a shitty shooter who jerks the weapon when they squeeze. I don't think I do that. Anyway, I've wanted to play with the trigger on this rifle to get the pull down below the 9 pounds or so that I have now.

Holy ****! I just did a search on ALG/JPsprings/JoeBob-screw and your post is already on Google. How in the hell do they get it that fast???

BTW, I know you have a link handy for a cheap place to get those upgrades. Care to share it? I'd rather do the work myself but it will give me something to look at. I did a DIY trigger job on one of my 10/22's and bought a Volquartsen comp trigger for another 10/22 and I like my MUCH better.

Bought a can and 200 round belt for a Maxim 1910 and I am hand loading it with 7.62x54r right now (will look really nice hanging on my wall). I'm about 25% of the way right now and I've already lost the feeling in my thumb.

I just gotta say... I love shooting with these people. The excuses are amazing

I've been meaning to ask, anyone out there shoot muzzleloaders/blackpowder?

I dabble... Modern smokeless during deer season and replica pistols and rifles to play with. What are you considering?

I've been shooting muzzleloaders since about 1996 or so, just for funsies. It was a hobby I picked up so I could buy "guns" and shoot before I turned 18. I haven't shot in a while and was curious if anyone else was into it. I still have all my guns and gear, but the cleaning and maintenance is so time consuming to do correctly that I stopped for quite some time. Cartridge/smokeless is so much cleaner

Yeah, I don't shoot BP stuff that much any more either.
Cleaning the replica stuff is a chore, but some of the newer in-line rifles aren't terribly time consuming. There are a lot of 50 cal bullet options these days, and you can really dial in accuracy. It's kind of akin to handloading.

Triggers/Parts Kits
JoeBob for all your trigger stuff... but standby for Black Friday, they're bound to have a 10% off everything with free shipping or whatever.

And for those who are interested.... TRUSTS!!!!!
The explosion in suppressor friendliness in the country (if you live in a cool state) has a lot of new lawyers getting into the "gun trust" game. I've got mine all ready to be notarized, probably do it early next week. Previously when I looked into it, lawyers were charging in the $400-$500 range. I got mine done by a guy who came very highly recommended for $100. I'm going to do an SBR and rimfire suppressor straight away too.

I've got a Confederate Navy reproduction cap and ball revolver that I enjoy. It is pretty accurate and packs a decent wallop.

This talk of black powder and muzzle loaders has reminded me that I have always wanted a flintlock rifle. Something that would have been used around the time of the American revolution. Is it possible and affordable to buy one that works?

Definitely. You can even have it delivered right to your door. I love Hawken style rifles.

These are pricey, but you can buy them in kit form and finish it yourself.
Other styles and brands can be much cheaper, but these are my favorite.

I built my first Hawken from a kit when I was about 14~15 and I was hooked. Flintlocks are kinda a different beast but are a shitload of fun.

I inherited a Thompson Center Hawken from my Father in Law. Really nice stock, brass furniture and double set triggers. I haven't fired it, but I know he got a couple of deer with it.

Props to Aero Precision.

Today's Deal of the Day was an M5 .308 lower receiver for $139 w/free shipping. I'd seen this sale before back in the summer before I could order one because I was out on the boat. I figured it would be back for Black Friday, but couldn't pass up buying today.

Problem is I don't want to use my personal CC, and there is no money-order option on the website. The NEX here only had pre-paid Visas in $100 increments so that was out... so I called on the phone.

Guy on the phone was awesome, took my order by hand and I'll put a money-order in the mail tomorrow.

It's tough to find places who will deal with a money order. The salary cost in time it takes an individual employee to process one has to eat into the bottom line vs. an online CC order... then again, they're not eating the CC fee, so maybe it's a wash.

Anyways, I'm a fan of Aero Precision.
