New guy trying to help a friend out...
Hey guys I'm new to the whole Miata thing. So anyways, my name is Brandon and I am Active Duty Army stationed at Ft. Stewart, GA, currently deployed to Baghdad.
I am trying to help a friend put together a turbo kit for his 90 Miata while we are over here. I have been looking around at the different Begi and FM set-ups and have came up with this mix and I am just wanting opinions.
His power goals are around 170ish...
Begi SSM kit w/o the FMU
FM Voodoo box
CXRacing FMIC kit with BOV
AEM Uego wideband
Walbro 255
1.8 injectors
Of course other things naturally done with turbo kits (exhaust, clutch, misc gauges, boost controller etc.)
Probably run around 8-10psi with this set-up
Now I got a couple of questions as well...
1. The Voodoo box: From what I understand it is similar to the MAF-T that the DSMers use. Am I correct? If so then I can use this to control the 1.8 injectors?
2. Ignition: Will the stock distributor retard enough to make the power safely or do I need to check out some other sort of ignition set-up such as the Bipes ACU?
3. Injectors: Is there a certain year 1.8 injector needed to work with the 90 1.6?
I think that is it. If you guys got any other suggestions please make them and if I am missing anything please let me know!

1. yes, limited to about 5-7psi
2. the stock ECU has no idea when to retard timing as it can never "See" boost. Typically we retard the base timing a little so it's a little retarded in boost...
3. all years work. certain years have different flow rates. all between 240-265cc

+1 on the DIY FAQ, you could get him to that power goal with a cheaper setup for sure. Once you throw a efw pounds of boost at a miata along with supporting mods power comes pretty quick up to about the 230-240 mark.

KPLAFIN: Thanks back to ya. MOS on paper is a 92F (petroleum supply specialist) but I haven't touched fuel the entire time I have been here. Been on our Security team as a 240B gunner. Should be back right before Christmas. Whats your MOS and how you like Germany? I got a buddy of mine over at Baumholder about to head to Ft. Lee next month.

d) Distributor? What the hell is a distributor? Around these parts, we set base ignition timing with the 'Crank Angle Sensor' it's a little round thingy on the back of the head - passenger's side of a '90 - loosen a bolt and change the angle of it while using a timing light. The hoity toity bastards around here like to call it a 'CAS'. Silly acronyms; there are too many military folk around miatas. There's no way to do an RPM/Boost based timing retard with stock electronics.
Finally - Injectors: IIRC, stay away from 1999/2000 injectors. Someone might call me out on it and tell me im full of it, but that's off the top of my head.
Third. You mentioned BOV in your parts list. That's on par with insulting someone's mother around here. Replace the "O" in the middle with a "P" --> BPV. Now wasn't that easy?! (And make sure you actually put in a BPV instead of a BOV)

Ok so after reading the DIY FAQ (great write-up BTW) and searching through some MS threads (mainly Brain's) I think this setup would work a little better for my friend...
Begi SSM kit w/o the FMU
MS (still deciding on DIYPNP or the stand alone from Brain)
CXRacing FMIC kit with BOV (thanks to the MS)
AEM Uego wideband
Walbro 190
RX-7 550cc
All the above with the basic supporting mods
I figure this setup would have the potential for high 200's, of course to keep it safe though it would be tuned for around 180-190 until more supporting mods were done.
I guess I should PM Brain for some info on which MS setup would be best for my friend.

A: The walbro 255 pump will overwhelm the stock fuel pressure regulator. Either get an aftermarket FMU, or instead, get a walbro 190HP. 190HP will love you long time.
