Default Please help figuring out Closed Loop Idle

I am totally lost i have no idea what i am doing at this point. First things first:

Car is a 1990 with original version 1 MSPNP. I have VTPS from e30 bmw. Had it for about 8 years so whatever one was popular 8 years ago thats the one i have. Car idles just fine in warm only mode but this is not the way to be. I have spend hours reading online how to tune closed loop idle control and its just beyond my understanding. Below are screen shots of my settings. I am now thinking i am just not capable of doing this myself, but maybe with some guidance i can figure this out.

Currently the idle just isolates up and down. At one point everything seemed to work somewhat fine and now that i messed with it the car wont idle at all in closed loop.

Any help or guidance is very appreciated.

Thanks!

I'd save your spark and fuel table, req fuel, and any other important settings, and reload the base map.

I've always left the idle settings alone when tuning MSPNP1s, and they work great. 1.6s do half their idleing through the coolant valve, so the electronic valve should do much.

Pretty sure all my other stuff is pretty good. The idle is nice and table in warmup mode. But as soon as i turn on the closed loop its start to bounce up and down. I need help figuring out constants like idle valve frequency and TPS threshold.

Hey, i also have a 1.6 and MS1 so try my settings. Everything i will provide is knowledge gained from this site. Idle valve frequency for 1.6 is 65, this is from Braineack. The TPS threshold is a number that is 4-5 higher then your throttle position with closed throttle, for example when i calibrated my TPS i got 35 without touching throttle so my TPS threshold is set to 40. Open the TPSADC gauge and you will see what your TPS% is when not touching throttle and add 4-5 to that. Of all my settings this one may not be usable but all others will work.

Try these values and also do a quick idle re tune. First set up your spark table in the idle cells with 10-17 degrees, what ever works i use 14. Then make sure your fueling is good, you dont want the AFR hunting so increase fuel until the idle rpm stays within 10 of your target speed. Last open the IDLEDC gauge in tunerstudio, then play with the throttle body screw to achieve a IdleDC of 19 and do this while no loads are on the engine such as lights, rad fan etc. Once this is sorted you should be right around 900rpm.

Great! Thank you very much!

Do you have a stock open/close TPS or a vtps? I have a vtps from an old BMW. Somebody used to sell these a while back. Wonder if my settings would have to be different? I am going to try your setup later today and play around with it a bit to see if it works.!

Thanks again.

I have a VTPS but a different one than yours. Use all my other numbers but the TPS Threshold value. To figure out what your number for that will be is easy. First calibrate your TPS, click on tools at the top and then select calibrate TPS. Get the closed ADC without touching throttle and full ADC get current with throttle pushed all the way down. My numbers were 35 and 225, but yours will likely be different which is fine.

Then you want to use the number you got for closed ADC and add 4-5 (so mine was 35+5=40) to it and that is what you use for your TPS threshold value. Also that same number will go into your over run settings for the and tps lower than value.

Try this and see what happens.

read hornetball's writeup on tuning MS1 "closed-loop" idle.
