Wow...thats pretty much what i just encountered...hope u guys can get me thru this one...
It read the disk fine, and it prompts u as the "next step" to turn off and reboot. When it comes back on, it has all kinds of errors on the screen and u cant do anythign but restart....if I eject the disk, all boots up as original...
It IS the desk she got with her laptop (not upgrade)
What serial code??? I can ask for for info if it will work... If u mean serial code as in proof I purchased it just now from a store...then no...Please lemme know asap guys!!!

Ill ask my buddie asap, he is the one who told me i cant just take my sister tiger cd and plop it into my computer and install it. I cant remember off the top of my head but he did say he could burn a disk off any computer that had tiger somehow install it onto my macbook. I was trying to upgrade my current operating system to lepeard thoe. He mentioned that the two computers couldn't be on the same network tho. Currently i have parallel on my macbook which allows me to run windows xp and install megatune.

Attn Mac Gurus!!! This Is It!!
Ok guys today has to be the day...my MS will be here this afternoon. This will be a little bit of a long post, but figured Id lay it all out there so u guys can hopefully get me the solution I need...
I realllllllllly want to use this Powerbook G4...PPC
Ideally I'd like to be able to run Windows on this (not looking good so far). I know IF its possible, itd be really slow...but I'll only be using Windows to run Megatune...
OR alternatively, get everythign updated so I can install MegaTUNIX
Here's what I have at my disposal...
-POWERBOOK G4....OSX = 10.3.9 (the comp I want to use-NO install DISCS)
-MACBOOK...OSX = 10.4.11 (NO install DISCS)
-Original TIGER install discs that came with my friends Macbook
-Dell Desktop PC (dont think it'll help but its there)
-I d'loaded a copy of Windows 98 "light"
-I tried using the Tiger discs to install directly to G4...NO GO (upon reboot error message and unable to do anythign but shutdown/restart)
-I tried installing wondows on G4 via "Q" software...unable to (PLUS was told PPC processor would not support this)
Ideas remaining...
-saw somewhere that if I could copy/backup OSX from wife's Macbook, then install into G4. I tried copying with standard dvd discs, but was unable to... I dont have a flash drive (could get one if NO other option), I dont have a cable to hook the 2 books together, I don thave an external HD. I was thinking MAYBE there's a way to use the dvd discs I have but Im not doing it right....OR maybe I could somehow use my DELL as a temp external HD somehow??? Or can this be done virtually somehow??
-My wife's powerbook has bootcamp but its "expired", dunno if it matters. BUT I found out that windows is already loaded on there. I even rebooted in windows and it works...dunno if that could be some help somehow??? Was dreaming that mayyyyybe there's someway to backup her whole HD (including OSX 10.4.11, bootcamp, AND windows all in one shot?) and install into G4?????????? There's NO way it could be that easy but thought Id throw it out there...
Its 3am, I'm dead tired, brain is fried and I KNOW there's gotta be a way to accomplish this with what I have... I hope one of you can help me figure this out and execute as well...I feel so frustrated...I have the comp I want, the software I want on discs AND another computer with the software as well AND still cant get it together???? Surely there's a way!!!
I'll be at work all day tomm, full access to internet (will be watching for responses), I'm bringing both macs with me, the discs, and the dell is there as well...If there's any big downloads or anythign like that I'll have plenty of time...and will continue at home if not finished..
And as for those who have posted links to other laptops, thank you...but Ive really fallen in love with this G4..Its perfect for me, and for tuning.
Unless there's absolutely NO reasonable way to get this going on the G4.....but I got a feeling u Macheads can help me pull it off...
~Sorry so long, but really wanted to have all info in 1 post to make it easier for anyone else to jump in...or even for u guys to help me out with..
Thanks in advance and GOOD NIGHT!

No problem. I'd ditch the mac myself. You could get a couple hundred for it on ebay I'm quite sure. The PPC macs are pretty limited on what you can really do with them, and its nothing very impressive. I've got a G3 and G4 PPC desktops that I'd just assume use as boat anchors than actually try to use. The G4 is 350mhz, has 64mb of ram, and does very little. OSX Tiger installed, and very unstable. Adding more memory to it is like smashing yourself in the face with a hammer, none of it works.
Running a windows environment on a mac with an emulator is going to require a lot from a PPC based unit, removing macos and installing windows is totally out of the question. Won't even begin to work.
Wish I could offer more help, but good luck.

I don't know why your Tiger install on the G4 failed. Try it again? I've installed all sorts of OS Xs, never once needed a serial number, your friend is blowing smoke on that.
Your wife's 'book is an Intel Mac. Very different from your G4 mac. Bootcamp will NOT WORK.
Your best bet is to get Tiger onto the G4. You haven't told us which G4 PowerBook you have. Some of them, like my old aluminum one, are still OK machines. The titanium ones are probably a little iffy. Anything older is probably not worth the effort.

wait, i think i see the issue.
When you use your friend's Tiger discs, does it go through the entire install process, or barf out early? I don't recall if this was true, but perhaps your friend's disc is Intel Mac specific, that would botch ***** up on a PPC mac. I'd think it'd barf out before you got to the end though.
Look at the sleeve that the disc(s) came in and see if it says anything about being specifically for an Intel Mac or something.

Dont have the sleeves, but the discs dont say anything either way..
I tried like 4 times last night and no luck. Basically, it reads the disc, the first prompt says click here to restart and begin installation. I click, it shuts down, starts up and then have a very weird error message across the screen...Kinda written OVER the screen...sayign somethign about "panic"???
I just noticed it says to hold down the C key upon restart....but it doesnt say to do that in the prompt...I tried, but might have been off on my timing..
Will try again, but dunno if that would make that kind of difference...
I dont know if I have a titanium or aluminum or what... Its a silver case

No the CASE is the same color, but thats not it.
Its smaller, and doesnt have those ports on the back..
My wife's Macbook is that SIZE, but black, and also does NOT have those ports on the back
And the disc drive is on the right on BOTH of them, not in the front like that pic

I have never heard of an apple OS needing a serial number. As for the C key, you put the disk in, reboot and hold C till the OS install boots. Its not that hard. If it craps out during the install then possibley the disk is damaged. if its a intel version then it probably wont ever even let the install run and just spit out a warning, apple isnt stupid to let software partially install and then only notify the user that the software is not compatible.

I was waiting till I saw SOME kind of life...
Memory 1.25GB DDR SDRAM
OSX V 10.3.9
When I put in the disk, it opens a new window and shows me what ON the disc... Then I just click on Install OSX & Bundled Software...new screen, says click here to restart & begin installation...
Asks me for password, I enter it, and it accepts it & shuts down..
Restarts, I hold down C the WHOLE time (tried 3x's)...and nothing
The screen comes on with the Power Button Icon on it...
It says I need to restart my computer in like 4 diff languages, and has weird code written all over the screen...(talking about No debugger configured, Latest stack backtrace for cpu 0, panic, unable to find driver for this platform "powerbook6,4"...
I try restarting and get the same thing, weather I hold C or not....
My only option is to restart, and WHILE its restarting to eject disc..then it'll boot normally...But once the error msg/screen is there I cant do anything but press the powr button to restart...
***The discs Im using ARE from an Intel mac(couldnt ask yest)...And yes the Macbook I have that I can copy out of is also Intel based...
Damn..there has to be SOMEthing to get me running.....One of those ftp thingamajiggs or something....I know it might be a pain in the ***, but pleaseeeee
Please help....

OK! stop right there.
Most of the software that is bundled on macs is SPECIFIC for the mac you are installing on. Theres a reason when buying the actual software consists of various CDs and or DVD's. it has the code for your specific computer, i.e. PPC or Intel based. You cannot install the intel based software that was made for a MacBook on a PPC based computer.
Your mac is not an INTEL BASED mac so there is no way in HELL you can use bootcamp. Period. Nuff said. You cannot use anything that has to do with the emulation of running natively a windows environment. this means crossover and cider also DO NOT WORK. PARALLEL AND VMware DO NOT WORK EITHER.
your only option is to use an emulator that works on PPC BASED PROCESSORS such as Virtual PC, or use Megatunix. Thats it. Installing tiger will still leave you on square 1. Installing Leopard will STILL leave you at square 1. Its not going to help your situation, except the ability to run newer applications with the upgraded system software required for some applications.
Before i bought this MacBook im using here (with an Intel 2 Duo Core 2.2Ghz), i was working on a 17" powerbook 1GHz laptop. I was able to get megatunix running on it, but it took hours and hours of downloading pointless libraries to finally make the damn thing work and access my USB-Serial converter.
When you download the libraries, it seems like theres only a few to download. Then you find out to even download those important libraries, you need to download libraries before the ones needed can work. Then you find out you need to download more libraries BEFORE the ones BEFORE the required libraries. Did i lose you already?
How'd i find this out?
Well, after installing the "so called required libraries", i tried installing on the terminal with -sudo and install commands, and it wouldnt install due to various errors of "missing libraries." That still doesnt put together the time you need to look for the libraries.
It was a bitch and pain in the ***, but it does work... after a couple of days with downloading libraries.
visit the megatunix website, and visit the FORUM. ask questions to the maker and he should help you along the way. I forgot which application you can use, but there is one taht will allow you to create a "sub" library folder on the side so you dont have to install a bunch of crap and fish out through your real library folders if you want to uninstall the damn thing. Im sure youll decide to uninstall it someday, so its recommended to do it this way. The libraries took over 200 MB of files in this separate library folder. Im glad i was able to remove it in the end with ease.
with that said, good luck.

Daaaaaaaaamn,
I understood why I cant do all of those options.
And I'd be ok with installing Megatunix as I mentioned..
Only problem is this mac doesnt have the apple x11 on it, and I tried looking but cant find a d-load for it...This (I believe) is whats also casuing me to not be able to properly install XCode2.5 (which I WAS able to download, but cant install)...
For this reason I concluded that if I installed a newer OS, I'd def have the applex11 (says its on the install discs), and even the xcode (also on install discs..although not an issue since i found the d-load)...
As for the libraries, and all.....I guess I'd just have to figure it out somehow..
But before I even get to that point, I have to meet the prerequisites of applex11, xcode, & darwinports (this I also located/installed succesfully)...
Thanks for takign the time to go through all this...
On a side note, for the meantime....The wife's macbook has windows installed, and like I mentioned I was able to boot back/forth last night...Problem is the Internet Explorer didnt work...(might be able to resolve this)
Meanwhile...could I dload megaTUNE from my home PC...save to a flashdrive...bootup HER mac in windows...install megaTUNE in windows via the flashdrive and successfully use the application?
I know its easier to fix the explorer & download straight from the Mac IN windows mode...but just in case I cannot?
This would be a temporary solution until IF/when I can get the G4 working to tune someway...
Another thing, I dunno what it entails...BUT the people at the applestore said I could upgrade the hardware on the G4 to an extent, but I didnt ask specifically about the Intel Processor...IS that possible? And if so, I'm guessing I could then use the Tiger discs I have now/run bootcamp and be done?
I know it's prob/def the most expensive way to go, but depending on HOW expensive the actual hardware/processor upgrade would cost it might be worth it to me since i have the software already...
I also know someone who could prob do the upgrade for me if I got the parts, since I cant just send this to Apple as I'm not the original owner...

I'm in love with the size of this thing to be honest, and the setup is sweet...
If I could find a cheap enough laptop that was similiar in size, and able to do what I need I would prob go for it...
But even with upgrades, a brand new laptop would be more...
Just called a place...answered one of my questions...
Cant upgrade the processor...CAN upgrade the HD & memory, to the point where it will handle Tiger, Bootcamp & Windows...THEY said it'll run prety good, not as fast as the Macbook, but should be good enough IF I upgrade the HD & mem....They are gonna call me back with a price, which I'm sure will be absurd, and therefore will bring me back to reality...
I have to see what I can afford (not too much), vs what I can do...
I wish I could literally gut out the powerbook and stuff it in the G4 while my wife was sleeping and never mention it again...
I'm sure this will get a big laugh form everyon, but anyone know anywhere to get a cheapass Intel Powerbook?? Refurbished/scratched/etc...dont care..
Then I can offload my G4 (have a friend that wants it), and by with the funds plus a lil more...
This is getting ridiculous...
So I guess the oNLY way I can use THIS G4, is if there's a way to download appleX11....otherwise I cant use it for tuning period, cuz I need it to install Megatunix...If we can get a definiitve YES/NO, then I know where I stand with this...Upgrade (def gonna be wayyy to much), or use a PC....
