They have to ship it to their supplier first, then wait to hear back from them. I think it will probably be a few days before I hear something.

Hopefully Garrett takes care of it for you. It would be unreasonable to put this on you saying that you messed with it in that you would have had zero reason to disassemble a brand new turbo.

It's possible that the remains of the nut is jammed in one of the tubes of the IC.

I wouldn't have thought so either, but it disappeared somewhere. It must have fallen out when he disassembled.

I've looked for it everywhere short of removing the compressor housing.

Well, the results are in. Mea Culpa

It turns out that upon disassembly the turbo vendor found a couple of small pieces of teflon tape plugging the oil feed holes for the bearings. As a result the bearings ran dry, and eventually led to the destruction of the turbo. The nut coming off was secondary damage, basically the result of relative motion between the shaft and the compressor wheel.

So, I used some tape where I should not have. The only place I can remember using any is at the block tap for the turbo oil line feed. Boy do I feel stupid.

The good news is that I do not have to pay for an all new turbo. There is some kind of a bearing replacement program that Garrett has, and the turbine housing is reusable, so it is going to cost about 1/2 of a new one to repair/rebuild this one.

That sucks. This is a good reason why you should not use teflon tape on tapered fittings (NPT or AN). If you absolutely decide you have to use it, use as little as possible.

Wow, just wow. I was about to get some teflon for my water temp sensor, but will just use my amazin nuclear Resbond thread locker...

I really thought I was being careful with the tape, but clearly a piece or two got in there somehow. Needless to say all of the feed lines and fittings will be removed, checked, and well flushed before the new turbo goes in.

Hard to say for sure, but I think the tape ****-up happened when I replumbed the system for the new oil pressure sending unit. If that is the case, then it took about 1000-2000 miles or so, including about 60 to 90 minutes of aggressive track time.

Basically, no worries if you do not use teflon tape on any part of the oil system that is downstream of the oil filter, which is just about any oil fitting that one would be tempted to use tape on. I did it just to be sure I did not have leaks at the oil tap fitting since it is hard to get a wrench on the fitting with the motor in the car. That is the only place I used tape since the rest of the fittings are AN flares.

you have to use SOME sealant on them, just not tape. get the high temp oil compatible thread sealant goo.

Probably start with Loctite 592.

Man that's a bummer, thats good that you don't have to eat the whole cost.

Fitting sealant:

Russell Performance - Miscellaneous Parts

"HOSE & FITTING ASSEMBLY LUBE AND SEALANT KIT
Precision Hose and Fitting Assembly Lube allows easy assembly and disassembly of hose ends. Our Assembly Lube will not damage the inner liner of the hose and prevents galling of hose ends during assembly. The Anti-Seize Thread Sealant provides an instant seal on pipe threads and eliminates the use of Teflon® tape. This sealant has a temperature range from -60° to +600º F and can be used as a gasket and flange sealant. "

You can get it at Summit.

Thanks for the sealant tips. I have also used permatex high-temp sensor safe sealant/gasket maker on some coolant NPT threads with good success. Anyone try it on NPT oil fittings?

One thing about threadlocker, it seems like the excess would flush out easier with less possibility of forming a chunklet that could lead to a clog.

Which teflon tape did you use? The white one?

Permatex Hgh-Temp Copper is what I used on the GTO for all of the brass fittings for the OP gauge and the NPT fuel barbs also. Fuel lines rotted and were changed and still so leaks at the fittings. It runs 80# of OP cold.

BTW for future information here is the Garrett program that is supplying the reduced price CHRA. ATP Turbo is one of their "Performance Distributors"

It's my understanding that the white stuff is not petroleum safe. You need the pink stuff.
