How accurate are these GPS units?

I remember surveying class in school saying that the standard (cheap) gps units are only accurate to something like 300 feet horizontal and 1,500 feet vertical. that could throw off your lap times if you are comparing lap to lap.

Thats what they quote on the unit, but that depends on so much. Also, is that at speed?

Im not saying your wrong, i am just trying to guage how accurate these are compared to a standard lap timer with a beacon.

I think they are supposed to have a "plus" version of this one which can log more channels and give you back rubs.

Good enough for pretty much 50% of the professional racers you see on TV. From what I've seen on friend's data, is within hundredths or less compared to their AMB times, and I'll have both compared in my car soon.

AIM's MyChron dash units are pretty sweet - this looks like a good entry level datalogging product and a nice alternative to the Traqmate. If I didn't already have a Traqmate I'd probably try one of these. Will be curious to see some real world reviews.

and the trackmaster app has already been tested and discussed. in my use it was always 0.05-0.10th slower than what my amb transponder showed. they're even better when used with an external bluetooth gps unit like qstarz. only downside is sometimes there's interference with those as opposed to traqmate and similar units that don't have that problem.

I would expect the Solo to be very accurate and consistent for lap timing, especially if the timing function compares GPS data to accelerometer data, as Race Technology's DL-1 logger does.

From what I understand, GPS accuracy is relative. Laps recorded back-to-back are accurate, but laps recorded years/months/weeks/days apart are not. There is a bit of "satellite drift" that goes on over time. My GPS data logger's lap times are in sync with lap times picked up by my AMB transponder.

The system sounds good and AIM makes some quality products, but the part about comparing different lines from lap-to-lap is marketing hype. I doubt that the data will show meaningful data from "lines" that vary less than a few feet.

Price seems good too. For that price, I wouldn't expect top-of-the-line components, but what you'll get is probably more than enough for track days. Biggest issue, if it is an issue, might be getting a solid GPS signal from its internal antenna. There is no port or option for an external.

My phone with trackmaster is accurate within a few feet. The phone I have has a 5hz sampling rate though (IIRC).

I did. It's within .100 of a second of both a GPS racepack IQ3 logger and a GPS lap timer/datalogger my friend has (similar to the Solo).

I have been testing the regular SOLO for the post several track days and in our last LeMons event. The unit is very accurate and capable. Functionality wise, it reminds me of the MS1 in a way that it is capable, but somewhat raw. Once you understand the menus and software, then it is a piece of cake.

The datalogging results are on par with units that cost a lot more that don't have any external inputs like Throttle and Brake sensors. I'm sure the DL version could compete with those units, but I have no direct experience with it.

Overall I think it is an excellent buy at $399 for an entry level datalogger and well made GPS based lap timer. I would highly recommend this to anyone.

I've had a Solo for a few months and I still can't believe how much the predictive timing has helped me improve my laptimes.

The software to analyze the data isn't very intuitive, but once you figure out how to use it, it's pretty powerful. I had a good driver drive my car and I learned a lot seeing what he did differently.

For the price it's definitely worth it.

My company sells them and they are popular. We also use them on a chumpcar which has been pretty good. You can label and compare drivers to show who is better where rather than just guessing. My Miata has an EV04 and I went around the track with a Chump car at a track day and we could compare results at the end. Other than the obvious lack of logging channels, they both still give you good speed, lat g, long g, etc comparisons including track maps driver comparisons etc.

The DL model adds some logging and is good for OBDII but you have to keep in mind that data rate of OBDII is very slow such that your data may be misleading unless you fully understand this.
