Default Help me Upgrade my M45

I just picked up a 92 with 37K. It has the following:

JRSC - set up stock as the kit came in 93-94, AFPR, running retarded to 6*. He has had it this way since 94 or so.

Car has a Jackson Racing Header, stock cat and high flow exhaust, all Jet Hotted.

Car came with a Walbro High Pressure fuel pump, Bipes, smaller "Tony" pulley--all new but never installed.

I also have a set of tan tops from a previous project and a Pierburg that I bought for another project (My locost project has been sold, along with my DD 90)

So that is what I have to work with so far.

I am looking to get to 170 WHP.

Decisions to make:

Ebay DIY IC or WI? Will both cost about $400 or so.

Bipes or go straight to MS? (leaning towards MS so I can ditch adjustable fuel regulator and get decent timing back and stop running so rich. I have heard up to 10:1 A/F on the stock setup.

New smaller pulley or get larger lower pulley (or both)? I don't have the pulley until I pick up the car, so I don't know how much smaller it is.

That's all I can think of. Feel free to chime in with anything that I forgot.

I'm not sure I'd use an EBay intercooler as you will deal with throttle response issues. You want an intercooler go with a W/A unit.

The wife's car is a bone stock JR unit with a Pierburg/BEGI AFPR/Bipes and 1.8 injectors. I made 145 RWHP on a 105k engine.

Funny your talking about thinking the car will be rich as I can't get her's rich enough with the AFPR system.

Depending on your budget I'd consider the following

1. W/A intercooler or something that resembles the Track Dog system.
2. The MS with big injectors instead of the FPR setup.
3. Pulleys to increase the boost. Include the Trackdog belt adjusting system to make sure you can run a tight belt with the smaller pulley.
4. Feed cold air to the intake and get rid of the lousy JR intake filter.

I'd do it in that order to make sure your being safe before you increase the boost.

Have you ever considered an EMB?
If your going to stay with the M45, then it's not likely you'll run over 200hp, and the EMB is a good, capable unit.

seriously. Sell the kit and get a BEGI S. I lived with a 170ish rwhp JRSC and it was a total pain. Idle droop. Shredding belts due to the tiny nose pulley dispite a $225 tensioner setup. and idle droop. The little blower did sound bad *** though.

Stein:

Since you already got a M45 I think that the way 04 Miata suggest would be nice. Just ad a IAT sensor and you'll get rid of the AFM as well. My old AFPR set up gave me serious tip in problems.

im with brain, for 2 k, im just at 200hp, go do it, join the dark side, buy a turbo

if u dont want to even consider doing a turbo setup, then ide do as 04miata said, get a cold air setup, somehow, or anyway to cool the temps down, because right now, your pulling hot air from your motor bay, compressing it(heats it up) through a hot supercharger, which sits right over your exhaust, then cramming it all into your intake,, fun fun...

cool that bad boy down,,

ps, if u want a bipes, i have one, ill sell it to you for exactly what i bought it for, as it sits in a box on my desk

I don't think they made a M45 CS manifold for the 1.6.

I thought the mods killed this thread. The seller backed out so I didn't get the car. Ended up with a 99 instead. Already bought T25 and downpipe, looking for manifold.
