Default help a newb out?

Ok so I got a set of coilovers (wont mention brand out of fear of flaming) but my car is lowered about an inch or two (just enough that 195/50/15 leave a finger sized gap between the tire and fender (I would go measure height but I dont have a measuring tape so excuse my ghetto size measurements) ANYWAYS.. I was reading about how when you lower your car, you then need adjustable end links or risk breaking something. I have had my sway bar out while I tried to figure out what to do and the more I think about it, the less sense this makes. My understanding: the sway bar resists a torsional stress caused by only one wheel raising/lowering thus causing the other wheel to also be raised/lowered to help keep the car more flat. so if BOTH wheels are at the same height, there would be no torsional stress on the sway bar. and If you loosen all bolts involved( holding endlink to control arm and one holding endlink to sway bar, let everything settle at its new lower height, then re tighten everything, what exactly is being "preloaded" as everyone says? I realize new endlinks arent that expensive so I could just shut up and buy some, but seeing as how I am an engineering student, I like knowing how stuff works. anyways, sorry for boring everyone with such a long post but anyone who feels like educating a noob feel free.
Thanks!

Link? My car's been lowered for 5 years problem free, but it doesn't see track use.
