The Queen Elizabeth Way has reopened following a fatal crash near the Garden City Skyway in St. Catharines early this morning.
The collision occurred at around 2:30 a.m. when a Honda Civic
carrying a family of four was struck head-on by a Chevy Cavalier, which was travelling the wrong way on the highway, said OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford.
A 50-year-old Kitchener man was pronounced dead at the scene, while his two daughters – an 11-year-old and 7-year-old – were taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
The mother, who was driving the Honda
, was airlifted to Sunnybrook Hospital where she is expected to recover, Woodford said.
The driver of the Chevy, an 18-year-old male from Niagara Falls, was also airlifted to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
He’s since been arrested on suspicion of impaired driving, but has yet to be formally charged, Woodford said.
The highway was closed for nearly six hours while a collision reconstruction team conducted an investigation.
