However, I'm pretty sure they call it a DIYPNP or a megasquirt, and it also is used in standalone configuration. It also controls your entire engine and isn't just a pulse width extender.

I don't know why people honestly hate these things so much. If your goals is 6-8 psi, then they are relatively hassle free and work just fine. I have done three Miatas with voodoo boxes and, while you may have to take 2-4 degrees of timing out, it still works fine.
I'll put it this way, drive a NB with a voodoo box turbo and then drive a 04 MSM Miata with factory tune and bolt-ons.
You'll come to understand what a shitty engine management really is...

What is that makes a properly tuned FM voodoo turbo setup so bad. Other then the inherit loss of power and response that your going to get by retarding your timing 2-4 degrees, it's throttle transition and behavior really isn't all that bad, plus in some states, like California, can you legally run a stand-alone computer? Even if it passes emissions regulations?
I live in Alabama; sure, but I would like to know that cause I may be going to work for a long call in California.
I'm not ruling out Megasquirt. I used the PNP 96/97 model and I had my issues with it. Eventually, it quite controlling the A/C and I never could get that fixed.

In CA you can't run anything, including any of the current fm or bell kits. Only thing you can run legally is the FFS setup and probably an old greddy setup if you can find one completely intact and with the carb eo sticker (good luck with that).
The MSM gets a pass because it already comes with all that crap, and its OEM, and it will pass CA emissions, and and and....you get the picture. No one is saying the MSM setup is ideal or even good.
I wasn't going to give you a hard time about it in this thread too, but when you ask a silly open ended question like that, I have to respond.

With my 2002 Corvette, I got Lane Culver. I installed the heads and cams, bigger injectors and fuel pump. Trailer it to him, left the next day with a perfect tune and a lot more horsepower.
Unfortunately, I doubt he deals with Megasquirt or imported cars for that matter. The closest tuners we have that would deal with a Miata is probably in Atlanta.

I can understand you there - the fine tuning is tedious and must be done by someone that knows what they're doing (or you if you decide to figure out how to do it), but that's not a good enough reason to abandon a clearly superior solution altogether. You absolutely CAN get an EMS running just as well (and better) than the stock ecu.

At WOT, but then the tedious stuff comes in getting it to work right, with injectors double the size, with a lightweight flywheel, in stop and go traffic, in high humidity or low humidity, 100 degree weather or 50 degree weather.
It was just beyond my experience, I needed a reputiable tuner.

As for the tuning lane culver can probably do it he told me he'd do my trans am if I had everything ready His computer just couldn't do it. So if you have everything to do it give him a call. I'm sure he'll appreciate the repeat business And I've seen an rx7, a few eclipses, and some other odd ball cars there so he seems pretty flexible

Is it the whole state? or just the major cities like most other states?

Most of it. There are some counties which are super relaxed and don't require the crazy inspections.
Why live in CA?
Because its nice. The weather is amazing. We have like a billion roads just as good as, and many way better than your guys' "tail of the dragon", we have beaches, we have snow, everything is within a couple hours, basically we have nearly everything at our disposal.
So yeah, the stupid CA smog laws are a small price to pay to enjoy the rest of the perks of CA, and obviously well worth it.
Why live in CA?
Because its nice. The weather is amazing. We have like a billion roads just as good as, and many way better than your guys' "tail of the dragon", we have beaches, we have snow, everything is within a couple hours, basically we have nearly everything at our disposal.

We can't quite get away with the car modifications some other states can do, but right now in CA is 66 degrees with no rain, just sun.
I want to go for a drive? I live 10 minutes away from great mountain driving and snow if it rains.
Go to the beach? 45 minutes away.
I wouldn't trade CA's great things just for some smog laws.
