Its for heat evacuation. Heat's shoved in the front, through your awesome ducting, through your awesome radiator, then it sits in the engine bay, eventually finding it's way past the engine, below the firewall, and out past the transmission and exhaust somewhere.

The extraction vents are hopefully placed in a lower pressure zone of the hood, meaning the aero over the vents "suck" the heat out directly after it's past through the radiator.

That's a layman's explanation anyways, bottom line is it works.

(The extraction vents are hopefully placed in a lower pressure zone of the hood) when i first saw them thats what I thought there's no way to know if where they are located will help heat/ air expulsion, there is, was a guy on here that put on, what to me looked like the most useful vents ive ever seen

Just for kicks, the homemade aero of a frieds. It's "a bit understeered" at the moment :)

What's the point of putting the wing so far back? I understand the whole clean air thing, but wouldn't placing the wing that far back cause the rear wheels to act like a fulcrum and lighten the front?

Yes, it will lighten the front, but it also can work synergistically with the diffuser and reduce drag. Of course its impossible to know if its actually doing so without good testing.

TBH I'm surprised the whatever sanctioning body he's under allows it to be so far back. Most require a wing not extend rearward past the body.

He did say it was a bit 'understeered'. If you level the wing out, you could probably get the proper downforce with less drag than a wing mounted over the wheels with a stronger AOT. Does that pass the physics 101 sniff test?

The wing has a low pressure region underneath it that works strongly on the airflow behind the car.

Notice the gap between the diffusor and bumper. There is an airflow above the floor/diffusor.

But it has not been run for that long, so we'll see what brakes first.

Has anyone ever quantified all this extra aero with lap times, seat of the pants feel..eg: I can now take so and so corner with 300 more revs/ a higher gear, I can brake 30 m later than I used to previously..... etc...

All this aero fascinates and tempts me but it's hard to know to go to the extra effort, cost and drama if it is only for minimal gains....

triple88a 05-27-2012 04:01 AM

Also the wing will provide more leverage that far back. Force x distance = more momentum around the point. Meaning it will "twist" the car more therefore providing more force against the rear tires.

lightyear 05-27-2012 05:17 AM

Having a wing that far back is more effective - meaning you can use a smaller less downforce/drag wing.

I plan on mounting mine far back too.

damir130 05-27-2012 07:49 AM

What do you do about the ~50% of upforce at the front tires that you get as a result of the rear mount? Is front downforce available at such low l/d ratios that you don't have to care about adding another 50%?

Not the most technical, but my experience:

No aero: Car is balanced
Just a splitter: over 50mph the car oversteers like crazy
Splitter and wing: car is balanced again

Reduced attack angle the frist time did not help, but lowering the car half an inch made wonders and balance became decent.
Aero opens a new dimension of options, and possibilities to screw up :)

Dual element wings like the one on that car are for high downforce, and should be used on low speed tracks. He could try removing the second element/top wing part. I think aero is something you have to balance out. So get as much on the front, then adjust the rear to suit.

The only aero mod I have done is purchase my hard top a few months back. My inspiration come from this. I so want to build those sail panels for my hard top. Also the electric fans pulling air from under the car, and the hood, and, and, and, ---- it I really just want that car.

Before lowing the car he tried to remove the top element and lowering the attack angle to negative (but still low grip at the front).
Lowering made the front work much better so the initial wing setup made it balanced (cut 2 secs on a one minute track right away).

Why not just buy a sucker car?
