I've owned a couple sets of S Drives, 195 and 205 and I actually like them quite a bit. I've done Autox on them back when I was at stock power and they seemed to do fine. They are not something I would take on the track. Daily tire? Sure, why not. If they sold them in the stock size for my WRX I'd consider buying them for DD duty. Where are you seeing them for $233/set?

Tire Details - Discount Tire Direct
$91.86 each. Minus a $75 rebate, minus a $60 rebate.
I'm really leaning towards the contis. Should live better and be a little lower grip than the AD08 so good for my dad, but should still allow me to have fun in the car. Dad and I are going to dual-drive this car on Friday at MRLS, then saturday I'll be driivng my car. Sunday he may drive his again. But aside from that weekend, this will be a street car, maybe an autox or two.

Ahh, didn't realize you actually had the Discount Tire card.
No S.drives in Subaru size. Sad panda. Looks like I can get another set of BFG Sport COMP-2s in 205/55-16 for $85/ea - $75 rebate, so that's not too shabby.

I would if I had spare RS3's. I put my new RS3's on my car before leaving portland and gave my old ones to James (in part exchange for him letting me use some of his shop space for a bit).

Hockey pucks?
I think I want something with a little less grip for him, ideally. That's a primary reason for going for the Contis over the AD08's even though the AD08 is a better deal and a much faster tire.
He is noob.

Buying tires for this thing today.
Looking at the new Continental Extremecontact Sport. Will be $320 after rebates (or less) at discount tire, but it's not on their site. Here's a link to the tire's site on TireRack:
https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...R5ECS&i1_Qty=4
Also considering the AD08R. Will be $325 after rebates.

finally, I'm also considering going with something less aggressive, like the Yokohama S Drive. $233/set. so cheap. Will these hold up on track?
The S Drives are lower treadwear than the contis, but also less aggressive tread pattern. I wonder which will last longer?
Priorites: decent wear, good grip, very progressive handling because my dad is a novice driver.
As much as I want the contis, I think the S Drive is probably the way to go...

The S-Drives are literally over a decade old now. Get Conti's. They are brand new and can handle any amount of rain, yet still stick more than enough for a fun street car in the canyons.

Awesome, thanks for the input on the Contis. Right now Tirerack has them at $92 plus shipping with no rebates. Discount Tire has them at $120 each, but no shipping and $135 in rebates so they still come out cheaper haha.
Happy with the pricing I think.

I got the Conti's in 205/50/15 this spring. I haven't had a chance to push them really hard, but I can already tell they are great. As noted in the GRM article, they have good grip in cool/damp. They aren't noisy, and they don't hold on to gravel (I live on a gravel road & that drives me nuts).

Loved my S.Drives as street tires. They even put up up with autocross (got like 180 runs and 16000 miles out of my first set). They do not like track. You get 3 or so laps and then they grease out, and that ks with a noob behind the wheel. They were otherwise great at everything else.
I switched to DZ102 for street tires though cause they are even cheaper and 90% as good as the s.drives.
