I for one am super interested in DIY BBK, can I help?

aidandj 06-30-2015 07:17 PM

I don't think custom tophats are feasible for any of us. If I remember correctly the corrado weren't cheap and had a lot of clearance issues. Were looking for a 4x100 circle track rotor. Thats how to stay cheap.

turbofan 06-30-2015 07:18 PM

I dunno. I think considering the price of the 949 and v8r BBK's it's really hard to justify a DIY BBK.

Would be fun to build I guess, if you have all sorts of free time...

aidandj 06-30-2015 07:20 PM

I think fun is the right word. But even if we can save 200. Thats a track day. Also I'd go for tse big brake kit for all the clearances.

hi_im_sean 06-30-2015 07:43 PM

any hat is going to be expensive. they are all $100+ a piece. 949 hat is off the shelf wilwood, v8r is custom to my knowledge.

i have a few places i could have some made, but they would be as much if not more than buying them from one of the vendors, and thats before anodizing. unless of course we made 100 or something.

the bracket isnt a huge part of the kit cost, we dont save much money there. the cost savings is going to be on the calipers and or rotors.

i dont know of an of an oem caliper that we could scoop up cheap on ebay that would eliminate pad tapering. discounting some modern sports cars, they all have the same slider pin design that is responsible for the taper. so i feel we are forced into a wilwood or equivalent.

aidan/deezums challenge #1- find cheap motorsports type calipers that arnt to big and are lug mount with the right piston area. our baseline is a $150 wilwood in whatever the popular bore sizes is.

the rotor concerns are directly proportional to the amount of heat we put into them (you dont need ducts aidan). youve read OGracing's brake thread: coning, warping, etc. a lot of people get by with the import casting 11" (iirc) friction rings, so im thinking we might be able to get away with an 11"+ chinese whatever at our amateur speeds. my local tracks are especially short and easy on the brakes, i cant even fade 1.6 brake with stoptechs if i try.

challenge #2- find a 11-11.75" rotor with 4x100 pattern, and the right offset, which appears to be around 0.5". just about any centric rotor from a 4x100 car is going to be around $25. thats about $280 savings right there.

it takes a few hours at most once you have the caliper and rotor in hand.

ive become quite the expert :giggle:

Corrado rotors are 11 inch and have been used by FM and M-tuned.

Why? Weren't you talking about making custom brackets? Do you have access to a mill but not a lathe or something?

(AFAICT, a top hat is dead simple to make in a lathe).

aidandj 06-30-2015 07:52 PM

True. Didn't even think of that.

i have the machines to make it, honestly just scared as they are quite critical. would not call it dead simple, but doable.

hi_im_sean 06-30-2015 07:57 PM

what would be the accepted lateral runout between all three surfaces?

they would be heavy too

but the caliper is icky

This is why I like my original TSE BBK, uses $30 corrado rotors. But we've had issues with them cracking, so just buy the real kits and stop fucking around...

I have a set of original TSE BBK brackets & lines that I haven't gotten around to posting for sale, if desired.

Fuck that was way harder than it should have been. Now that I replaced the vent once I could do it 10 times faster.

aidandj 06-30-2015 10:15 PM

No coroplast at my home depot. I'll go make cardboard templates and the cut it later.

I need to go install my vent windows

aidandj 06-30-2015 10:24 PM

I don't want peasant 11 inch brakes :)

aidandj 06-30-2015 10:26 PM

Go do it now! It takes like 10 minutes especially with spoon feeding. I'll send you pics.
