Okay cool, thanks. I ordered a leak down tester to investigate further.

Blow by means worn rings right?

sixshooter Dec 18, 2017 05:53 AM

What you see from the tailpipe is condensed water carrying soot onto the driveway. Nothing to fear.

Also, for the record, when Reverant says to use 1.4.0, use 1.4.0.

Elaborate, please. Did you find something broken in 1.4.1, that works in 1.4.0?

Yeah-ish. I installed 1.4.1 and it didn't start. It would fire a couple times and die. Then I dug into the startup/idle settings and they are basically all different. I got yossi126 to bail me out with his tune so I could copy the settings. Still didn't start. Per Yossi and Rev's recommendation, I downdated to 1.4.0 and the car instantly started and idled perfectly (with Yossi's settings).

yossi126 Dec 19, 2017 05:27 AM

There is no official MSLabs 1.4.1 ini file, so if you download say a DIYautotune firmware, it has their I/O (Rev's wiring is different). You can manually assign the I/O's but it's a pita.

nigelt Dec 19, 2017 09:53 AM

I didn't use the .ini file you sent, I just loaded the 1.4.0 firmware and changed the startup/idle, boost control, and ignition coil settings and fired it up.

Interesting. I loaded 1.4.0 on my desktop, and pulled in one of my 1.4.1 msq's. I could not see any differences in how start / idle is handled; at least with regards to the screens.

Might the issue have been sync faults?

After this, I'll leave you alone to work on your car.

Glad you got onto modern code and got the car running.

nigelt Dec 19, 2017 12:03 PM

So, interestingly, I went to 1.4.1 and the car didn't start, and I changed all the settings there. Then I went back to 1.4.0 and made no settings changes and it just worked. I have no idea what is different between the two, but it is somehow significant.

I think I want a bigger turbo. Sonofthehill, what's the spool like on the one you have? I want to have torque as low as I can get away with, without running out of steam before the redline, and I can't justify the cost of going EFR right now.

BEAVIS Dec 19, 2017 07:26 PM

What turbo are you currently running?

Is the "Trurbo" typo in your signature intentional?

I forget now what it was a reference to, but it kind of stuck https://www.miataturbo.net/build-thr...6/#post1296459
Maybe given that I've lost the reference, I should probably just spell it correctly.

I'm running a China eBay special: "T3 .48AR 2.5" V-Band Flange .42AR Compressor Internal Wastegate Turbo Charger"
If I could go a little bigger with the same housing so I don't have to change anything else, that would be most excellent, especially since it was only $200. I believe there are a couple that fit that MK Turbo customers have used.

nigelt Dec 19, 2017 07:50 PM

Another thought is maybe I can get the power out of this turbo that I want with better tuning. I'm running a little rich in boost, and I'm running conservative timing. Should I expect to be able to squeeze out 2-3 more PSI up top with a better tune?

nigelt Dec 19, 2017 09:13 PM

I might have found the issue - there was 0 preload on the wastegate. I originally installed it with 2 full turns or something, but it must have bent or stretched or something. I wound it on with 3 full turns. I won't be able to test it until Thursday but I've got a good feeling about it!

sonofthehill Dec 19, 2017 10:15 PM

Mine gives up 1000 rpm in spool but will boost past 7000 easy. Maybe I should try playing around with the small turbo again, see what happens with the 250kpa spring :dunno:

nigelt Dec 19, 2017 10:17 PM

Hm. 1k is a lot of spool to give up. I'm going to keep fiddling and see if I can get it to breath a little more.

sonofthehill Dec 19, 2017 10:18 PM

Yeah, the small turbo is super nice, insta-spool.

ridethecliche Dec 20, 2017 10:41 AM

I'm having a bit of a hard time with that too. I'd like a bigger turbo in the future as well but if the spool lost is more than like 500 with the 2871 ish sized one then mehhhh.

Most things I've seen show that things even out around 3500 or so when the bigger turbo takes off. Need to compare the charts in addition to how long it takes things to spool up as well.

What size were you thinking of moving up to? You currently have the turbo that mkturbo ships with right?

sixshooter Dec 20, 2017 12:48 PM

If you are at wide open throttle below 4000 RPM then you should have downshifted. Get the big Turbo, get the big Power.

sonofthehill Dec 20, 2017 12:51 PM

Yup

At least what MK Turbo shipped with in 2015. I think it's still the same one now.

Um... better? I like spooling at 4k, so that's cool. Lower spool would be great, so would more power up top. I'm going to stick with this one and see what I can do to eek more out of the top end with tuning and plumbing. I think giving up spool would make it less street friendly.

Sonofthehill what turbo are you running?
