Oh yes, ye olde absolute pressure wastegate

Added VAG/Audi coils over the weekend. Didn't have major reason to do this as the VVT wasted spark has been working without issue - probably due to my capped torque and baby boost keeping relatively low cylinder pressures. Current spark plugs are 8 heat range gapped at 31 thou. Lots of insurance in the current ignition system.

Modified a water line that was running too high on an already high turbo. It was potentially causing an air pocket and hot spots and the water system did not bleed in its usual manner. It used to be up and over - now it runs under:

Also did a quick hot compression test to have a baseline. I'll probably do a cold test for a further baseline because I'm less likely to run the engine to warm if I suspect an issue in future where I then want to compression test. Number 2 hole is a bit meh, I'm not a huge believer in compression test accuracy. I prefer leakdown testers although its a longer process and I dont have a compressor at home. Results:

This is awesome. I was honestly wondering if you were going to 'wedge' the adapter between the manifold and the block to angle things down a hair and gain some extra clearance.

Is there a VD of this ish yet?

Many thanks. I've uploaded a couple of 3rd gear pulls further up this thread for someone to try to import to VD. VD and current Haltech logs don't talk. I think there is manipulation that can be done either within the Haltech log or VD but I've never cracked it to get reasonable data.

I've put the first turboed dyno session on hold while I continue to zip up some more items on the car. I have no pressure on the project. Aiming to get on a hillclimb day mid-May, car is in use daily for fun.

Previous vid from my first time at the hillclimb track last year when I got it running on Haltech. All my own mapping on the road but not a particularly exciting vid compared to lots on here!:

Cheers

I was looking at transmissions. Has anyone done a Nissan 350z CD009 6 speed into a Miata? Expecting it will be a powerframe delete conversion to mount.

The ratios on a 3.6 diff look great to me and are pretty close to stock 6 speed. Strength and shift is supposed to be good. Lots of them available where I am.

Interested if anyone has done this or even researched it and has data on lengths, selector position, clearance in the tunnel etc.?

Many thanks

Having seen one off the car, I doubt it would fit easily in the trans tunnel.

Thanks for the heads up. So with strength comes bulk. I'll be keeping my eye out for one locally so that I can inspect it. I've also seen some sizes online so might do a rough measure of the cavity and standard box to compare.

Not looking for an insane cut and shut project. Thats not the right answer for me. BMW route remains a viable option but will find a cheaper way than full Kmiata as it appears eyewateringly expensive and I can get drawing and machining done at good rates.

Do not get my word for it. It has been some years, but I can clearly remember thinking "damn that's a fat gearbox".

If you have contacts in the machining world, it may be worth investigating the thread on here about strengthening the 6 speed:

https://www.miataturbo.net/suspensio...ission-105065/

The guide talks about doubling the torque limit of the box, which should give plenty of headroom...

Excellent link and well worth a research. Friends have done a number of gearbox strengthening work on other platforms with mixed results. Sometimes modifying bearings to stronger units - sometimes modifiying oiling to 5th gears for top speed reliability (on other platform 5 speeds).

I'll have a proper read, thanks for linking me up. My 2nd gear syncros are already pretty upset with me crashing into second.

Biggest killers of the 6 speed seem to be heat, which leads to expansion/flexing of the internals which leads to failure of 4th, likely linked to the weaknesses linked above.

Some people have had success with gearbox oil coolers etc, but I don't think it's a full solution..

If you can find someone who can do the surgery to the 6 speed in the UK I'd certainly be interested in getting it done too!

I have friends and contacts that are capable of this type of work. Depends on their appetite and what they will charge for viability. I'll be looking into it more over the year and discussing with them so if I do pursue then you will see it on this thread. Would be a lot easier and cheaper than a transmission transplant.

Interesting you mention heat. My gear stick shaft and boot - even when NA - gets mental hot when given periods of high revs. Revs definately create a ton of heat in them.

Some more light reading for you:

https://www.miataturbo.net/race-prep...coolers-97465/

My 6 speed will bind going into 5th when the oil is hot, but I've never got as far as measuring temps - that thread suggests that the internal oil temp can get well over 100 under hard use. With most turbo setups the downpipe runs close and parallel to the gearbox for quite a way which also doesn't help with heat...

Had the car out on a hillclimb track day yesterday. No formal timing other than phone - great fun and knocked 2.4 seconds off last year's best NA time on same phone app.

Managed 18 runs and the car still appears happy enough. Brakes are abysmal and inconsistent - hoping this is only a hose/vacuum check valve issue and will chase as they are bled to perfection. Think the aftermarket hose may be getting sucked down ahead of the brake booster being charge correctly.

Please don't be jealous - This level of performace is attainable by most as I think my car is only running 200-230hp just now (still to get on a dyno). 7.5psi rising to about 9.5-10psi at 7000rpm on standard VVT engine.

Find a car club/hill climb/sprint track venue near enough to you that does open pit practise days and have a blast at your own pace. It was immense fun and looking forward to the next one.

Flashing white lights on shift light are set at 7000rpm.

Had the car back on the hill for a session on Sunday. Should really catch up this thread although no major updates - just tweaks and mapping.

Ran out of talent, brakes and caught out a bit by intermittent ABS failures. Had great fun.

Got another day on the hill at the weekend. Attempting to clean up my driving to something more consistant and will then try to build up speed from there. Its definately a work in progress...

Really enjoying the car.

My plugs were at 3,000 miles turboed so decided to refresh them. Zero visiable signs of stress on them. Did a warm compression test at the same time for reference:

Happy that they all remain high and consistant.

Trying to get a last minute place on a dyno tomorrow and will update if I do with what it has been running and where we left it after the dyno.
