I ask because I am trapping as fast as you down the quarter i expect my motor is on borrowed time too hope you get it sorted soon.

BoostedSmurf 07-08-2014 02:48 AM

It doesn't help that I had absolutely no mechanical empathy on this car. It probably would've lasted longer if I didn't hoon as much as I do.

As for getting it sorted out "soon", that isn't going to happen. Taking my time with this now. Want to do it right this time around. That means I still have a lot more reading/learning to do before even ordering all the parts I'm going to need. Still planning things out.

jimmyneutron 07-09-2014 05:17 AM

Sounds like a wise choice

So I plan to pick up a '99 motor the last week of July when I'm back from vacation. Mostly just looking to use the head since I'm getting a steal for the complete motor. Needs a rebuild because it overheated.

Still on the hunt for a '94-'95 block. Mostly because I want a nice short oil feed for the turbo.

Hopefully around then most of my current pile of parts will sell to pay for the internals, although I'll be back to work and should be able to have all the internals purchased and ready for the machine shop to start work in August.

Here is the current parts list I have for just the motor. Comments and criticism welcomed. Want to make sure all the parts I'm getting actually make sense and will work well for high HP levels driven hard. It'll be mostly street driven with lots of 1/4 mile track time and hopes of finally making it to some lapping days.

- '94 Block
- '99 Head
- Wiseco 83.5mm 8.5:1 Pistons
- Eagle Forged H-beam Rods
- ARP head studs
- ARP main studs
- ATI Harmonic Balancer
- ACL RACE bearings
- Cometic MLS Headgasket
- Boundary Engineering Street Oil Pump 0 shims
- Supertech Intake Valves 33mm Hi-flo
- Supertech Exhaust Valves 29mm (+1) Inconel
- Supertech Dual Valve Spring Kit 63lbs
- Supertech Valve Seal Set
- Gaskets - Oil Pan, Crankshaft + Front Seal, Rear Main
- Gates Complete Water Pump + Racing Timing Component Kit

That will be pretty much the same engine build as mine, minus the 99 head.

Bring that head across the border and have Pashko CnC port it!!!

BoostedSmurf 07-17-2014 04:37 PM

Actually buying the head in MI. I'll have to look at the cost/benefit of a CNC port over a hand port. Sounds like it'll be more expensive than it'd be worth for my build when I could just turn up the boost.

Erat 07-17-2014 04:43 PM

You'd be surprised, see what his costs are at least.

All of my porting (hand port) was like $250.

Send me his contact info. Doesn't hurt to ask.

So not much was happening on the car since I was recovering from surgery and was out of town until beginning of this week. With some people interested in parts I finally got out to the garage to slowly start pulling parts. That turned into me pulling the diff, motor w/ turbo, and trans all tonight.

The number of times I have taken a picture like this is almost depressing

Oh look, you can see directly through my block!

Going to the states either Wednesday or Thursday to pick up my '99 motor and hopefully drop it off at Fab9Tuning.

Jeffbucc 08-06-2014 01:45 AM

In for awesomeness. Sorry about the block man. Your engine build is going to be pretty similar to mine, should be great.

Thanks Jeff, it sucks it blew up but I kind of had it coming lol. I'm just excited to start rebuilding this thing.

Today I pulled apart the motor. I am still amazed at how much damage was done by this rod. My transmission bellhousing is split too so I'll have to throw one of my spares on there before I sell the 5speed.

Then I started pulling out the wiring harness, I got up to the point where everything was ready to come through the firewall before I realized I hadn't eaten all day and it was a good time to call it quits.

My turbo kit and torsen should be sold this weekend which means I can finally start giving money to Bryan for shiny parts and can get the block to the machine shop sometime this month.

So a slight change in plans for the build. Rather than building my motor now while I`m getting things fabbed for the drivetrain swap at Glease Manufacturing and then bringing the car back again for hotside side fab things in the winter I`ve decided to get all the fabwork done at the same time to save myself a tow.

This means in 3 weeks the car is making the trip to Glease Manufacturing so we can start work on the complete TII drivetrain swap and the building of my tubular manifold, downpipe, and possibly IC piping.

Today I pulled apart the rest of the car so its ready for its trip.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1409335429

Had a heater core leak when I first did the engine swap so that padding under the carpet on the driver`s side was stuck to the floor and has started to stink. Will clean that up later when I`m bored.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1409335429

Old harness removed. Will be getting a new harness built when everything is back together.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1409335429

Pushed it out of the detached garage to power wash everything and have to keep it in the attached garage for now since the other one is full of car parts.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1409335429

Also bought a squaretop manifold that popped up in the classifieds last week.

I`m hoping to be able to buy the new turbo from Fab9 in the next couple weeks if I can finally move this FM2 kit I have sitting here.

Jeffbucc 08-30-2014 07:33 PM

Dude I'm so excited for this. Please take a ton of photos of your custom wiring harness. It is something I plan on implementing in the future.

Been a bit since stuff has happened. Mostly been buying parts and planning things out. Anyways, the car is now at GleaseManufacturing where mounts for the drivetrain swap are being done and the manifold and downpipe will be built. I've already bought the turbo and a few other goodies but when I actually find time to go to Fab9 to pick them up I'll post pics.

As of last night my car has a transmission again. Well sort of. The mounts are built and the Tii transmission bolts into my car with the mockup motor. Some trimming needs to be done on the shifter hole on the car and the slave cylinder needs to be modified and bolted up; but the big part is done.

Clearance cuts on the bellhousing. These are for the starter to bolt up and for clearance for my downpipe.

Trans mounted with all stainless steel hardware. That nasty crossmember is going to be sandblasted and painted or powdercoated for the final install.

Next up is mounting the Tii diff which has been impossible to buy. I've tried to buy 3 or 4 different ones and things always fall through. Paid for another one this week and that should be on its way to me soon. Once it gets here it'll be getting installed.

Jeffbucc 10-09-2014 06:49 PM

Glad you are getting some progress going! That transmission looks burly!

(I'm glad you are powdercoating that crossmember, it is gnarly lookin')

Yea, hopefully it'll actually handle the abuse and power I plan to throw at it.

And the cross member is gross compared to the rest of the car. Guess it just shows the difference between a car that came from the south and the average for a car from around here. Glad I have a cali car haha

BoostedSmurf 10-15-2014 07:45 AM

I think I have the worst luck when it comes to finding a diff. Paid for the one last week. It was about to be shipped out when the seller messaged me to let me know it was an s5 diff rather than an s4 diff. Looks like the diff install gets delayed, again!

If anyone knows of someone with a Turbo2 rx7 that is selling an s4 diff let me know. At this point I'm willing to buy multiples and just having spares for down the road with how hard it's been to find one.

Met up with Bryan from Fab9 today to pick up the first few parts. I can only bring so many parts across the border at a time before I start getting charged extra fees and duty. That and I have to pay for all my fabwork on the drivetrain swap and manifold before I really start ordering parts.

Fab9 550hp intercooler
Skunk2 throttlebody
2 40mm Turbosmart external wastegates
