charlies turbo build
Hey guys thought id start a build thread on this forum..
Ok so i bought the car stock in feb this year.. Its a 1990 1.6 with 5speed. Original plans were to improve the handling a little and just keep it as a nice daily.. that changes later on Feb: Bought axis oldschool wheels, bc coilovers, new gear boots and replaced the broken rear window. Then the engine blew so replace with a 1.6 longnose, new clutch, new mounts, fix the thermo fans and sort out some wiring. IDK about miata cages, but I do know that the honda cusco cages are more dangerous than not having anything. You're safer w/ just the roll bar, i don't want to start a debate bu you should really read about it.

The rotas were the 15 x 7 +0 with 195/50/15 The works are 15 x 9 +10 with 205/50/15 on them In other news hoping to have some updates shortly.. been flooding over here and has slowed progress a bit. |

Also bought my clutch last week, Os Giken Super Single clutch and fly :D All thats left to do in purchase the above and sort out an engine to start mounting everything to it. Once i get that on the spare ill take my car off the road and install it as well as wire in and tune the haltech :) Im still undecided on whether or not to get cams to put in the motor when i get it. Should i get cams now or wait till later ? Update:
A lot has happened in the last few months. Purchased all my parts and started doing the swap. Removed the old engine and pulled the new engine from its donor (nb6 motor). Pulled the motor apart to replace the seals and head gasket. While i was there i installed some toda cams. I am up to the stage of putting the motor back together and starting to finish this off. Also decided to go ls2 coils because i can just wire them in with the haltech and will give me all the spark i need :) So list of what to do. - Put the motor together (replace all seals cometic headgasket and arp stud kit) - Install Clutch, manifold, turbo lines and turbo - Put Motor in the bay and hook everything up (Intercooler and piping, Oil cooler and mount dump pipe etc.) - Wire in the haltech w/ ls2 coils and wire in the innovate and defi link display. - TUNE :D :D Also bought an fd carbon diffuser to play around with and it should look pretty sick. Ill update when anything else happens. Update:
So the engine is back together and ready to go back in the car. Over the last week i changed over the fittings and hoses for better quality ones and just to give my self i bit more insurance. Also started mocking up my coolant re route and that will be done inside the car. All thats left now is wiring (haltech including ls2 coils, defi, wideband and boost) exhaust and tuning :) so close now. Update :)
Intercooler piping is done. Just need to make a bracket for the intercooler :) Oil cooler is attached, again just need to make a bracket to mount. Wiring is just about done and the custom spark leads have been ordered. Not much left to do other then exhaust, bracketry, finish wiring. Im getting super excited now :D :D :D Oh you can also see my coil pack bracket for the ls2 coils :) Also sent my bbs centres off for coating today :) cannot wait to get all this shit together. Update:
Well the car is back together now.. Its running extremely well. After a few injector problems i could only do the first tune on 6 psi making 160 rwhp using stock injectors.. But i then got some 570cc bosch ones and went back for a retune. The car made 219 rwhp on 12 psi. Very happy with that considering its an stock 1.6 with just cams and a small 2254r :) ill post pics when i have them. Cheers |
Just out of interest does that gauge face work with our clusters or did you get a cluster from a Jap car that only goes up to 180?

Whose manifold is that? And are you seriously going to track those huge wheels? They look expensive.

um its a custom lovefab manifold. Been on a few cars over there. Yeah ill track with them. A lot of people may not like the fact that they arent the lightest but its what i want :)

Picked some stuff up from ceramic coating today. I had the manifold and rear housing done in flat black. Will post photos tomorrow :) in other news, i tested the wheels and wing to see how it ties in. Camber in the rear is still too much for me. I am doing the bushings and diff over the weekend so ill get some offset bushes to put in. Update :D
So over the weekend ive got every thing done that i wanted to :) With a help of a mate we removed all the remaining control arms and the diff, and today i ran my new fuel lines :) The fuel lines were a pain in the arse.. first getting the old lines out, and then trying to fit the new ones down behind the fuel tank :(. Yeah theres a vacuum source just havent run it yet.
Update :) so its been a looooonnnggg day. But i can finally say my car is back on the ground again :) With the help of mates re put the suspension and diff back in :D Control arms recieved new poly bushing with offset bushings for the camber ones as well as new balljoints. The diff got the Tomei trax lsd put in as well :) Photos speak for them selves.. Now lets talk numbers. It made 200rwkw on 1 bar with no timing and a lot of fuel. So this was very conservative. The tuner brought it back down to 160ish rwkw on 8 psi to let me put more km's on it driving on the street. the actual mounts are pretty easy to make .. its just the stands.. Hold up ill see if i can dig something up ;)

I've got mounts to take measurements for the trunk/wing mounts, just need an idea of general design.

Epic build Charlie. i remember back in the day when you were looking at a kit i was selling :). I'm so jelous that ur tracking those wheels, last i looked they were over 1k a piece to get to tassie. Glad you stuck with it and ended with a ride to be proud of!.
