Started the install! I'm going to use rivnuts (aka nutserts, popnuts) to bolt the flares onto the car. The installation tools were between $40 and $100 so I opted to make one at work...(The black button head cap screws are temporary...I'll be getting stainless fasteners;))

Just more install pictures of the flares...it took a little longer than I thought it would, but I suppose its because I wanted to put them on to the best of my ability. All I have left to do is trim out all the excess material on the fenders to make room for some rubber!

Couple pointers from my experiences to those of you that will be undertaking this project:

1) You may want to put one additional fastener on each of the front flares on the side towards the doors on the underside of the fender....when I first bolted them on they fit nicely, but since the flare continues on a few inches past that last fastener the flare wasn't nice and tight there. On the rear, I added two additional fasteners, one on the door side just like on the front flares (Underneath on the rocker) and one underneath on the rear bumper to hold the flare nice and tight on the bumper....

2) (2) of the bolt locations on each of the rear flares is backed with another piece of sheet metal roughly 1/2" behind the body skin.. I posted pictures to point out which holes have this....just keep this in mind as you proceed. Since I was using the rivnut, the piece behind interfered, so I drilled my hole in the skin, then put a hurtin on the back piece with a pry bar and hammer to give me clearance for my rivnut....

Anyways on to the pictures:

With the Rivnuts he'll be able to remove his flares as often as he likes without difficulty. They're my new favorite fastener, just started using them this past week. We have the rivet gun tooling set with 4 different metric mandrels.

Beyond the slight color mismatch they look great. The only problem is they cover up the rear light. Any plans for that? Pictures with the holes and no flares really show how high up they mount, impressive. Outside pics, now!

Whoever invented them is a damn GENIOUS! I strongly urge people who buy these flares to use them....much better choice than standard rivets, nuts/bolts, screws...

The flares just have the gel coat on them, no paint...but it looks okay for time being

My rear marker lights are just for show anyways...no wiring or bulbs :giggle:

I would be outside now taking pictures but its snowing....

Well I got everything all trimmed up today (I think those of you with prettier cars than mine are going to have a heart attack when you go to do this :giggle:) . The front fenders were a breeze…the rears, not so much. On the fronts I just traced the outline of the flare, then took it off and drew another line about an inch in from the one I traced. On the rears I measured about 2.25” from the center of the fender edge up and then free handed the tapers in….I think I have some clearance now :giggle:

get the 3M clear bra for the rear flares after you have them painted to avoid chips.

something i,ll be doing when i get my set on hehe

also do you have any links on the exact riviting pieces and gun you used?

I got the rivnuts from work...but here are the same thing on ebay

5/16-18 x .027 -.150 grip length 17/32 hole size rivet-nuts in plated steel.

These are the large-flange style and they are ribbed for better grip against

rotation.

Rivet nuts rivnut nutsert nutserts 5/16-18 steel 10pc - eBay (item 290378077353 end time Dec-13-09 12:57:20 PST)

As for the tool, I made my own at work (See pic I posted earlier) but you can get one off ebay or from Mcmaster Carr for between $40 and $100

this may have already been mentioned but will you be welding the inner and outer fender together? have you already done that? just curious!

Your refering to the rear right?...Naw I didn't and don't plan on doing that. I'm not sure it would be of any benifit

JDMAflac 12-06-2009 07:13 PM

For the rears, I cut slits, hammered, filled with epoxy, folded the slits up, and then rivet each slit onto the body. Structural integrity? Plus you have access to a welder i think.

yep rears! there is a couple of benifits! structal integrity, and to seal it up.....wouldnt be a problem any time soon, but i can see it being a place for cancer to start!

that works too! :D

ill be welding mine up with my POS home depot special welder! when i can dish out some mulah for them! :giggle:

Cspence 12-06-2009 08:18 PM

Unfortunatly I don't have easy access to a welder ...everything I do that needs welding I usually just bring in to work and do it....I can't imagine the structural integrity would be affected that much. I may put some sort of epoxy or sealer on the joint though...

id just be more concerned with it sealing! if i lived closer id let you use my shitz.

can you do some testing for us.............put a decent sealant on there, let it cure and then go out and do come hard cornering to see if there is any cracks or anything in the area from flex..................please? :D

Cspence 12-06-2009 08:36 PM

I'm gonna look around and see what would work best....I'll report back ;)

WonTon 12-06-2009 08:40 PM

awsome!

as to the welding thing.....i just have a thing for returning something to factory specs after modification for peace of mind!

example: notching a frame rail for clearance and boxing it in!

slutz4 12-06-2009 10:29 PM

flares + hardtop + wheels/tires, should make this car look incredibly sexy
