Wrong Ryan Vlad :)

ryansmoneypit 04-07-2015 10:25 PM

Ok. Ive had a bit to cool down. I guess its just money. Fuuuughetabouuuutiiiiiit.

EO2K 04-08-2015 01:43 PM

You know, I do have that complete VVT head sitting in my garage taking up space...

aidandj 04-08-2015 02:03 PM

There we go, thats more like it.

18psi 04-08-2015 02:05 PM

 MT: we will make sure you overbuild. every. single. time

While you're in there, switch that 2560r for a BORGWARNER S366 :fael:

ryansmoneypit 04-08-2015 02:16 PM

It's insane around here, for sure.

ryansmoneypit 04-08-2015 05:06 PM

So the funds have been allocated to go either vvt or non, however I had never considered a vvt swap and have not done any homework on that subject.

aidandj 04-08-2015 05:06 PM

What engine management do you have?

aidandj 04-08-2015 05:08 PM

Just missed out: https://www.miataturbo.net/miata-par...-%24125-83748/

With megasquirt 2 you are going to need VVTuner probably. Is it a Reverant built ECU?

ryansmoneypit 04-08-2015 05:16 PM

Brain, ms2 enhanced I belives.

I know, unfortunately I have a spare bedroom full of parts that I probably won't use, because I was afraid of missing out. Good thing about that though, is that I will have a massive yard sale on Mt turbo.

I am working 6 days a week right now and don't have a whole lot of time for research right now, so I am hoping for just a little spon feeding. Please.
I am really considering the vvt head swap now.

1. What fpr will I need to use, my '95 unit, or the 2002 and up?

2. Is the vvt tuner from 949 really all I need as far as electronics to run this on my NA block, or is a crank trigger necessary?

3. Are the throttle bodies interchangeable?

Again, I beg for the spoon.

I have the BE oil pump, 1 shim, 70 psi.

18psi 04-09-2015 01:12 PM

either fpr will work, id keep your return style one
I would sell the ms2 and buy an ms3 if I was going to run a vvt head
nope, but I have an nb2 TB if you need one
you'll need a vvt oil pump. you'll also need other odds and ends

I skimmed the last page. Looks like you've been bummed out building, and want the car finished. If that's the case, I'd put a 99' head on it and go drive the car! It will be fast, you'll like it.

If you want the best of the best, start over with a VVT head/plumbing/oil pump/vvt control/wiring for it/tuning it for bump in mid range/low end torque with no benefit to actual peak/high rpm power.

Personally I hit the "get it put together quit sweating details" phase of my build about a month ago. :)

EO2K 04-09-2015 02:17 PM

I believe he should be find with the Boundary pump, they are all built from the wider geared, higher volume VVT style pump. If in doubt contact Travis, but I know they stopped building the narrower geared pump gear sets some time ago.

patsmx5 04-09-2015 02:19 PM

I bet you are right, I haven't looked at their pumps in at least a couple years, but way back when they first started they did offer both, makes sense to only offer the bigger pump.

if using a newer pump, yep.
if not, better to check.

Also Ryan, make sure you do the research on all the little odds/ends required to do this, because the last thing you want to do is overwhelm yourself, nickle and dime yourself, and just get discouraged again.

When my 01 was down for the built engine swap, then troubleshooting issues, etc. I really lost motivation to work on the car. I vowed to myself that from there on out I'd not take on anything I couldn't complete in a weekend. Keeping the car on the road and enjoying it keeps you motivated

Jeffbucc 04-09-2015 02:29 PM

Seriously, all of what Vlad said.

Those 2-3 months of downtime, while I was figuring out what direction I was headed after my Potato ate itself, just destroyed any motivation I had. It is unavoidable in some situations but definitely avoid it when possible.

ryansmoneypit 04-09-2015 07:33 PM

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the input. I think that's were I am at as far as the motivation. It's been apart all winter, now it's spring, the autocross season started without me and I still need a small wad of cash to get back on the road. I has the moneys, I just feel like I NEED to drive this thing. Just to remind myself how much fun it is.
The 99-00 head sounds most appealing to me. I had never planned on vvt, and it just sounds like another good size project within my current one. As Vlad said, I already have a ton going on here. A lot more than a weekends worth for sure.
After months without driving and what seems like a jet turbine powered money shredder, it can be overwhelming sometimes.

ryansmoneypit 04-10-2015 10:28 AM

Treasure coast miata has a 99 head for what seems like an outrageous price. 600, pulled from a running engine. So shipping and machine work and it's an easy 1,100 with a manifold and tb. YIKES!

EO2K 04-10-2015 12:00 PM

Yeah, I've NEVER understood TC's pricing structure. I pretty much stopped looking at them after they tried to charge me $1,200 for a MSM 6 speed that turned out to be a 6 from a 00SE (based on vin tag pic they sent me.) When I called them out on it they shrugged and told me there was no difference.

THe 4W/6D converion could probably be done in a weekend, but you really have to have your ducks in a row. I understand the motivation thing and getting bogged down. Scope creep is real, and it doesn't help with all us jackals around barking at you either ;)
