I like the idea of the Ferrari style tail and would change the mouth/grill from square to round, maybe a budget engine swap to something in the 200hp range. That would be fun. In college I had a 954RR and a spitfire for a rain car. Watch the rear end in the rain it likes to snap slide.
Really cool Stag man, love it. It's super clean and a very rare car, one of the last models they made. I agree about the hate, like sure they were outperformed by a lot of cars in their day, but even the best performing cars of the day are vastly inferior to anything made in the last 30 years. They did have their era of course, winning Le Mans in the 60's with a spitfire, but were quickly surpassed and never kept up with the competition because their design and progression stagnated. Just like all the old LBC's, they are super unique, fun to drive, and cool looking. A lot of "car guys" only like one make/model, or only a specific genre, and don't even look at other cars. Us real car guys enjoy everything. I get stoked on just about anything and always notice when someone has a car they've kept clean or put a lot of effort into.

I've thought many times about miata swapping the drivetrain with some boost and maybe one day, but for now I'm keeping it original. The sound of the straight 6 is great, and they made 112BHP stock, with a cam, some compression, and the right carbs they made 150+ pretty easily. That would be plenty for this old car that weighs 1904 lbs. ****, it even feels surprisingly peppy as-is, actually faster than I thought it would be, and it sings!

And that brings us pretty much current. I'll keep this thread updated as things progress. Current hold up is that the press-in wheel studs are lose in the hubs, so I'm going to tack weld them in from the back. Yes, I know a new hub and new studs is the right way to fix it, but the wheel bearings feel great on this thing and I'm not about to disassemble them. Hoping to get the rest of the rear end in and bolted up this weekend. So maybe another drive soon!

Yeah, to keep it simple you could build a nice spare engine on a side stand at your leisure. Where do you even get a spare GT6 engine ha. One day I'm going to body swap a TR4/Stag/MGB GT on a Ghettocet roller and do naughty things at track days to freak everyone out

Please do! I looked into this myself before I got the GT6 running, but found the wheelbase to be way different. Like the 9" on wheelbase, and 10" width difference. The width you could make up for with flares, but the wheelbase length would be tough. A miata is huge next to these old things.

As for building an engine for this thing, I'd go with the 2.5 TR6 lump. Same head, and it's bolt-in, and you can make 180-200bhp out of a well built one.

I'd suggest the 2.5PI (aka fuel injected) engine, that made the TR6 a rocketship whenever Mr Lucas could deliver enough fuel. But in that chassis, hmmm, maybe a bit too much of a good thing ...

Awesome progress! Give us some carb noises as soon as you get it out for a drive!

Nothing too eventful, but glad to have it buttoned up. Running Corvette C4 air shocks which should allow me to fine tune ride height since it's probably going to sit pretty low now with the lowering block in the rear and stock stuff up front. The plan is to lower the front when I go through the front suspension.

Also new rear brake cylinders, pads (shoes?) and cleaned up inside of the drums. That stuff was all surprisingly tricky seeing as ive only ever had disk brakes.

Test drive hopefully tomorrow!

Looking good! The can of PB blaster in the foreground speaks volumes haha. Every time I do a set of drum brakes (which has been a handful at most), I always take a picture so I can remember where every one of those damn little pieces sits

Good luck with the road test tomorrow

Test drive was a success, should have taken more pics but we were too psyched on the drive. The rear end is super solid, NO play in the back wheels which feels awesome because you could literally move the wheels in/out 1/2" easily by hand before. Overall it drives really nice, I got new fluid in the gearbox as well and it's shifting super crisp. Way better than I thought this old transmission would ever feel. Overall it feels great, but the front end is feeling really ghetto now that the rear end is so tight.

The rear is sitting perfect, the lowering block did it's job and the rear is sitting at about 1-2* of negative camber. I just need to drop the front and it will be sitting how I want it.

However, probably going to be switching back to the miata for a bit, so I'll update this in the spring once I switch gears back to this thing. Next tasks on this project:
  • Overhaul front suspension, all poly control arm bushings, rack bushings, sway bar bushings, etc. New ball joints and tie rods. The works here.
  • Modify these NA miata seats to actually fit the car with me in it. I have plans to cut out the bottom so I can get them lower in the car, as well as a foamectomy so I sit lower in them, actually get them bolted to the car.
  • Some kind of exhaust. Thinking a single center exit with a conical muffler of some sort. It actually sounds surprisingly decent with the current glasspack on it, so the plan is to add to that and get it out the rear.
  • Get lights wired in so I can street drive it, well the wires are there.. just figure these things out. You saw how I plan on doing the rear lights, so I want to pick up on that project.
  • Eventually we want to do a quick respray on it, most of the body work is good from our previous paint job though a few areas such as the rear 1/4 need work. The plan is to get it looking good again though.
