How to build a mediocre miata in 7 short years.

Car: 91 Miater with 234k miles. Its red.

My friends have made fun of me for the past 4 years about collecting parts and not doing anything with them...so I just decided to turbo the damn thing and not care.

Bought car for 1000. It was nasty. Replaced nasty interior and other stuff. Did body work and paint.

Body shop Pics:

I replaced the doors (they looked like a fat girls rear end) and fenders...I think cause of rust.

Found most of the drivers side rear was bondo...that was fixed:
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1337277016

Then it looked like this:
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1337277016

Then this:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1337277016

Then this:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1337277016

Then it was all like this:
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1337277016

And then...we drove it.

Looks like this but more lower and with the club lobster must GV lip...thats not broken.

Needed garage so I built one:

Onto the Trubo build

Gages wired up. MSPNP Gen 1 bought it a while ago so don’t laugh. Drive the car NA and tune and learn MegaSquirt.

-MS upgraded to High Res 10x.
-Put in 305 Supra injectors, tune on them.
-Put in GM IAT sensor…tune.
-Put in Auto VTPS…tune
-Read every damn post on tunning on this site.
-Idle is good and logs look good on this motor, time to upgrade.

Bought:

-100k Mile 1.6 and trans
-Old FM manifold
-s13 sr20 t25
-New FM DP and Down elbow
-some cool intercooler APEXi or something.
-Custom intercooler piping with sweet TurboXS knockoff BOV
-460cc RX7 injectors
-gen 1 mspnp running high res
-AEM wideband
-Begi coolant reroute adapter with Kia Waterneck
-1.8 torsens
-1.8 FW and FM Stage 1 clutch
-Toyota COPS and built harness, bought COPS bracket from trackspeed because lazy.

It was massaged back out with now only a tiny thin skin coat of filler on it. Looks very good.

Is that a 1.6 water neck where the mixing manifold goes? I like it, and if so, did you figure out what pre-bent hose works? It seems like all your plumbing you've added is very clean and well thought out. I like.

Winter drive this car...totaly ideal:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1359566996

So dealt with some weird electrical issues that turned out be the 6 ground block, it is now grounded in two places.

Pass side headlight motors (I have two) are wonky so have another one on order.

Took the car out two nights ago after getting all the electrical stuff done, and it felt like hitting a wall round 3k. MS looked through some setting in MS....Overrun Settings - Coolant Temp was set to 160, I hover around 180 on a 60 deg day. Switched it to 200 deg and everything is good.

Put Willwood 11inchers in the front and Sport brakes on the rear:

Yes sir it's a 1.6 water neck.

I will take a new picture of what it looks like now for you. As far as the hoses there I used a piece that I cut off from the giant Cadillac coolant hose that I am using for the re-route connected to a coolant splice from Begi (which feeds one of the water lines to the turbo) and a stock miata hose I had also that has like a 120 deg bend it in. I will get a better pic today.

Thanks I guess the benefit of taking a very long time to do something is that you can think it through. I went through about 5 designs for that part alone.

I am about to start the learning process. I fear what I'm going to find under my paint when I start stripping because I know the car has been in a few fender benders.

Great work so far!

Nice garage!

You should post as you go. I would have suggested substituting pipe thread plugs for the "cursed water plug" and the similar rubber plug on the back of the intake manifold while you had the engine pulled. Stuff like that.

Looks good though.

A friend did it and I helped a bit. I HATE body work. I'll build motors all day but body work is like voodoo to me.

Got some pictures of the front of the coolant re-route

So I cut off the sharp end of the pre-bent pipe that goes to the heater but left the part where it has the bead all around (basicaly where the stock o ring goes) Used the same hose I used for the turbo drain...forgot size now 3/8's? Then tapped the 1.6 water neck with the same I guess 3/8's tap that I did the oil pan. Two fittings and point it towards the pipe and connect with hose.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1359569268

This is the old hose that went from the bottom of rad to the hard pipe I think...its one of them at least.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1359569268

Begi Coolant splice with a barb on it that feeds the turbo some coolant.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1359569268

bad picture but you get the Idea:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1359569268

The bottom hose is the front of the Cadillact hose for the re-route that you have to cut off to fit onto the radiator. It fit perfect and had a great angle.

Oh and I put in a gheto catch can. Home Depot water seperator with some fittings on it. It works on all my other cars...so why not here?

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1359569268

And here is what the car looks like today...dirty from sitting for a while.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1359569268

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1359569268

Also, let me just say that without all the helpfull posts here and all the helpfull people that did most of what I did from scratch and documented it, I would have never done this. So thank you all.

You know...I thought about this, after I put the motor in :) I still need to get a new Radiator to replace the Auto stock one that I have. So maybe then I will do it.

I am horrible at documenting my processes. I am a Software/Puter engineer, I can do many things but when it comes to documenting it I fail.

Also forgot all the suspension stuff:

-FM ButterFly brace
-FM rear Brace
-IL motorsports strut brace...front.
-Polly bushings all around
-Polly diff bushings
-Koni Sports (funny they work awesome on my other cars) with (I forgot the rates now) It was 700 front and 450 rear but I lowered the fronts to 500 I think because of how horrid the ride was. Still not ideal.
-Racing beat front and rear sways
-949 front end links
-Racing beat front lower tie bar.
-94 R-package tie rods.
-HD double duce Roll bar with padding.

Will get some. It's two Alum L brackets, one short one long. Long is attached to one of the turbo inlet bolts with a little bit of it shaved on the side to fit. Short is attached to the long one with rivets (I don't weld alum yet) kinda making a box with a missing side and the actuator sits on it.

It was something I did very quickly to solve the issues of placement of the actuator so its not the best but at 7psi I did not see any fluctuation and at 12 psi its stable as a rock so I am going to guess its stable enough?

Awesome build brother. I can really tell you have been reading up, good job going COPS right away. Only thing I see is that you kept the 1.6, but if you are this invested in it there is no going back now. Enjoy it!

Any deals on the 1st gen MR2? The white one looks awesome! And the red sw2 looks cool as well, NA car? How do you like MR2's? What do you think of the MR2 vs the maita?

I know I kick myself for staying 1.6. It was supposed to be a quick cheap turbo build on the original 1.6. But as time went on and I collected more and more parts I didn't want to use this one and it was kinda too late. Oh well I might build a 1.8 at some point.

As you can tell I love MR2's. I got into Auto-X and doing some track days with my Celica GTS (my wife had one also and still need to sell them) I realised I hated FWD and wanted to learn how to drive better.

Celica's:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1359578206

Got a deal on a MK1 MR2 (the black one in the pictures above that is getting towed away) and thought "Low Power, Mid engine, strut suspension. What better way to learn to drive?" And then it got out of control.

Black race car with another blue MR2 that I built for a friend.

S/C car that will be getting a 95 4agze motor from a Jap Trueno.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1359578206

and the white race car (rare 88 hardtop, most were t-top or sunroof...helmet room was limited)

Honestly the miata is probably much more FUN to drive for me. I've autocrossed it and it felt like it was just way to easy to drive at the limit...this is not a bad thing. The MK1 MR2 feels like a little go cart but you HAVE TO know where the weight of the car is at all times, its a balancing act and getting and staying at 10/10ths is very tricky but when you get it right its very very rewarding. In a Miata if you loose the rear end its not that hard to get it back, doing the same in a MR2 'usualy' will result in you facing the other way.

BUT once you setup the car suspension wise in a very weird way, 700lb front 450lb rear springs with no sway bars, toe out in the rear and toe in in the front the car handles awesome but its still tricky to drive. I can hang the rear end out on that car now though all day.

The MK2 mr2 is faster even in NA form then the MK1 on the track AND is a better daily driver with lots of interior room and a 'GT' feel to it. I just don't find it as FUN or rewarding to drive as the MK1 or the Miata. T-TOPs are the biggest pain in the world also, between taking them off or putting them on and them leaking no matter what you do.

Go to MR2OC.ORG there are some nice MK1 and 2's on there. Look for rust as they are known for rear wheel arch rust. Everything else is easy and you can swap what ever the heck you want in those cars. 2grfe motors from 2007up Rav4's, camry V6 and Lexi put down between 280whp to 300whp in stock form and are easy to swap.

Fireindc 01-30-2013 04:18 PM

Thanks for the details, I've always like mr2's. I even really like the MRS as well, neat little cars. They are really light, too iirc. 2nd gen mr2's are pigs (2700+ lbs?), but the first gens were closer to a miata weight.

I've only got time/$$$/space for 1 toy, and it's the miata. So i'm not getting one anytime soon. I've always loved them though.

Yeah the spyders are on par with the 85 first gens. My STS car is at 2270 or so weight wise and the spyder is around there also. MK2 NA's are actualy in the 2400-2500's.

The problem with the spyder is the motor, although fun in that car its just not good enough. A 2zz swap is a nice motor for it but has a very peaky power band...think s2k but even worse. There are guys that are swaping the 2grfe v6 motors into them. 300whp and tq in a 2300-2400 lb car isnt all that bad.

Fireindc 01-30-2013 04:31 PM

I always thought a nice MRS with a 2zz swap would make a nice "poor mans" elise. No idea if handling is comparable at all though.

MicaCeli 01-30-2013 04:42 PM

It could be close but the limitation of having full Mcstruts all around would get you. Cool thing about the spyder is that all the body panels are bolted on so you can put moar tire on it and bolt on some wider panels to compensate. Out-tire the Elise and setup the struts realy realy well and you could get very close.

Elises are so much purtier though. I am still thinking of getting one...I just have no idea what I would use it for. I seriously would just park it and stare the the dang thing all day.

-88 S/C MR2

I need to thin the herd. Celica's and 91 MR2 prolly need to go. Thinking of an EVO for a daily but dont know yet.

Love this area as its quite but we need to move somewhere closer to Columbia MD so my Wife doesn't have to drive 55 miles each way to work, plus she wants a neighborhood as we are looking to start a family.

That was a pic of when it was first built. I have a bunch of shelving now and 4 96" lights with two bulbs each. Its nice and light in there. I wish I finished the inside. I wanted to run more electrical in there, insulate it and drywall it. A light color would have really lightened it up also.

Threw some enkei RP02 or whatever they are with older Toyo R1R on them on the car instead of the 5 year old Azenis so that it can handle the weather a bit better.

Installed a begi turbo heatshield after cutting it up so that it would fit with the heater lines installed. Mine are in the stock location was this thing made for a full track re-route or something?

Going to the Reston office tomorrow so I should be able to get 100+ miles of logging done...if I can get traction.

Car is running at 12psi at the manifold now, no leaks, no fluids have burned off. It's running a bit rich but not a cruise (I think I am using Brains or Hustlers table). No matter how many projects I complete I am always in awe when things work and am waiting for something to go wrong.

I did have enough issues with this project though:

-The begi coolant spacer had a tiny little ridge that wasn't machined out where the t-stat goes. So it looked like the Kia water-neck was on correctly but there was a tiny little space. Getting it out when it was in the car...was fun. The NAPA stick on gaskets that BEGI supplied were also terrible. Some sanding of the t-stat seat and good gasket fixed the issue.

-My smart self installed the intake manifold gasket backwards....coolant leak. Fixed thnx to a search on MT.net

-Had to redo few fittings and using yellow thread tape on them to seal them back up.

-The best one of this built was when I installed the the new fuel filter. I replaced the lines with new ones that fit fine but I guess were a tad too big. Fuel waterfalls in the garage are fantastic.

I attached my tune if someone wants to take a look at it. Please criticize.

I know and a STI hatch would be a perfect car for me, I just have way too many Subaru friends and know too many Subaru people to get one. Plus for some reason a Stormtrooper Evo X needs me to drive it.

Turbo noob question: So that brackety thing that seems to be so cleanly managing your coolant/oil lines, from whence did this come and where might I acquire one?

I'm always very jealous of how clean these simple NA builds come out. Good looking project, keep it up! :bigtu:

MicaCeli 02-01-2013 10:37 AM

I was going to put a kit together for this and even bought the FM one. But then ARtec posted this and I could not pass it up:

https://www.miataturbo.net/miata-par...s-39663/page1/

I wish I could say that I built it myself but this was just too good to pass up for the price.

The heat shields are from Begi.

Car is running ok but needs more tunning.

-AFR's while used to be rock steady the car was NA with the old motor, are not all over the place. Need to figure that out I think maybe a grounding issue.

-Need to re-tune idle a bit as I did before...new motor and stuff.

-the pass side headlight motor is still having issues, motors seem ok, plug ohms and volts are correct....got to be short somewhere still. Maybe with me moving the harness around so much might of jared something loose.

-Need to build a bracket and put my new drivers side seat it. The 99 seats that I have are just not the most comfy things.

Resolved my electrical issues:

https://www.miataturbo.net/general-m...77/#post974451

Went out to do some tuning but traction is non existent with the temps being in the 20's.

One fun thing is that even thought I did the minimal coolant re-route heat is very low :( I will need to figure something out to get better heating in the car as it is a nice thing to have.

ANNND I have a coolant leak. Found that the rear Kia neck is leaking with the begi spacer again. Yay.

Also the head gasket on the exhaust side looks wet. I am hoping that its just coolant traveling from the spacer but maybe some ARP studs and new headgasket are in order.

Car is going into hibernation for a bit while I work on my other cars to get them sold and out of the way. Need to complete the S/C MR2 also so I can get it out of the garage.

hornetball 02-02-2013 06:44 PM

Did you use the T'stat gaskets that BEGI supplies or OEM?

I'll be starting the car tomorrow with a new engine and reroute (including the BEGI spacer). I used OEM gaskets with the little green rubber O-ring. Here's hoping.

At first, Begi ones (NAPA). They leaked. Then OEM ones...now also leak but I put some gasket sealant on there...that could be the issue. Also it helps it you take like 1/4-1/2 inch off of the longer bolt as it was a total pain in the rear end to get that bolt out and in with the firewall there.

Oh make sure that the T-Stat sits PERFECTLY inside the BEGI housing. Mine had an issue where it looked like it sat perfectly but there was tiny little lip that made it sit just a tad higher on one side then the other, caused a leak. I had to shave it down a tad.

I need to work on my fueling map, I think I will turn down the boost and get working on that as much as I can.

Has Bell changed their source on the gaskets? I received the very first 1.6l kit they made, and the gaskets which I got were fairly thick and laminated with a peel-and-stick adhesive on one side. I absolutely loved these, as it avoided the problem of trying to keep the whole stack perfectly aligned while installing it. My recollection is that the inner edge of the gasket slightly overlapped the thermostat itself, and held it perfectly in position.

Didn't have any leaks, either. (Well, apart from the one at the front caused by me failing to use any sealant on the freeze plug which I elected to install in lieu of the blockoff plate which they supplied.)

hornetball 02-04-2013 01:14 PM

Started my new long block over the weekend and did the first couple of break-in drives. I've got a good seal at the back (thank goodness). My only leak is an oil leak from the front, and I'm expecting the worst. Sigh.

BEGI still supplies the peel and stick gaskets. The ones I got were noticeably thinner than OEM. Since I installed the spacer with the engine pulled, I opted for OEM gaskets.

Be careful about overtorquing. I've been able to make waternecks leak in the past by being a gorilla. Unfortunately, if you're installing with the engine in-situ, not much room to use a torque wrench.

Dear noobs,

This is what your parts list should look like when you search a bunch and buy the right shit.

he forgot the 1.8L swap though...

I know :(

I learned it form watching you Brain.

Honestly since I collected parts of over the years some of them went out of style. The things I would change now would be:

- 94 bottom end with a 99 head
- MS2 or Brain Built MS3 (this might actualy happen)
- Abe's manifold and DP if staying with a 1.6 or even the 1.8 his stuff is nice looking and functional at the same time.
- 6 speed
- Bought a good bodied 1.8 N/A as a base.

Hindsight though.

I might of done this the second time because I was HULK mad at it.

curly 02-04-2013 05:55 PM

Are you actually running multiple torsens? Lol.

I'd also change the injectors if you're upgrading your parts list. What year did the miata/rx7 injector design debut?

Huh.

It's been a while, but I seem to recall the gaskets which I got being rather on the thick side. Then again, I don't recall what the OEM ones look like, except as brittle, broken things that need to be carefully scraped off of delicate aluminum surfaces with a razor blade.

All I was saying is that the peel and sticks that I got (purchased maybe 2 months ago) were quite thin. I can only conclude that the source has changed since you Beta-tested some years back.

Joe Perez 02-04-2013 07:26 PM

Weird...

The ones I got came from NAPA, though I can't recall whether they were spec'd as OEM fitment on a Miata or from some other car. Might want to call Bell and ask- they were quite nice.

Sure and I have headers everywhere on the car :) Fourth language, my spelling and grammar skills lack sometimes.

You know, as soon as I started the car and heard how horridly loud the injectors were, my first thought was to get some nicer injectors. Sometime down the line it will happen.

Looking to buy another house and rent ours out. Also need to get rid of some cars and get one of them running so that I don't have to take the whole harrem to the new house.

So new purchases will need to be on hold for a little bit. I'm happy that I got the car running, as it gets warmer and I have more time I will start fine tunning the car.

I am constantly amazed by the fact that ALL of those members of our forum for whom English is not a native language seem to have a better grasp of spelling and grammar in English than certain of those members who were born and raised in the US.

Lord knows that I have only the most pitiful, rudimentary grasp of German (mostly words and phrases directly related to needing to borrow a soldering iron from someone, etc.) and I'd be completely lost in Greece or Turkey.

Oh the irony. :noob: I really shouldn't talk, I often get distracted half way through a sentence and it stops making sense. Or I wont check what I wrote beyond making sure that there are no squiggly red lines and fail to see that I properly spelled a word, just not the correct one, or the order of the correct words was wrong, or the order of incorrect words was wrong. :vash:

I think it's mostly due to how much actual English education us immigrants received vs natives. I spent about 3-4 years in ESOL classes where they crammed English down your throat for 2-3 hours a day. Most natives only get an hour class of English and the semester curriculum is so drawn out that boredom sets in and they learn nothing. Don't get me started on the 'murican Education system.

Funny enough most people who meet me have no idea that I'm anything but a white American kid. Tell them my name and I get an eyebrow raise.

Saying that, my emails at work are very concise and well worded. Get on a forum and I sometimes have a hard time even reading what I wrote myself. I think it’s mostly about the audience I guess. My wife’s favorite thing in the world is to read my posts on other forums and face palm the whole time.

German is number 5 on my list. Most of what I remember is stuff like 'I collect stamps' 'I play soccer in the summer' I need to brush up on it.

Bringing this back. Mica, what thread do you have going into the 1.6 water neck it isnt 1/2" npt. Its close though doesnt look tapered and the npt goes in like 1 thread. So 1/2" BSPP? Or maybe M14x1.5.

Sorry Leafy, have been busy and haven't been on for a while as I had no updates other then my Kia waterneck is leaking again and I hate the Koni's.

I got as much use out of the oilpan tap that I could and re-tapped the coolant neck with the 1/2 NPT so that I could use all the Lowes fittings that I had laying around. Then put thread sealer on there and screw it in as far as it will go. Works good.

Leafy 04-04-2013 02:57 PM

Its no big deal, that housing wouldnt fit with the turbo any ways. I ended up going with the stock water pump inlet turned around backwards and with a threaded aluminum elbow welded to it.

MicaCeli 04-05-2013 11:34 AM

Cool. Honestly most of my mods are a compromise because of me not able to weld Alum at the moment and being too lazy to take it to someone that can.
