Quick update: tried driving around the neighborhood and reverse was not an option until I pumped the hell out of the brake and it finally engaged the clutch. I'm thinking one of these cylinders is fried.

MKTurbo VVT Build

Got the slave changed and the ss braided hose installed in place of the curly line. Syncros going bad tho slowly. Now need to get this on a dyno. More to come in april.

The soft clutch line to the slave had two incisions in it which caused the issue.

So after not tuning the car for a while I have taking it out and touched up my afr table. Currently please with what i have on the table; however, having a few issues with AFR discrepancies and throttle receptiveness if you will. What I mean by that is that I try to hold gas pedal steady and the afrs start to jump around and not steady themselves. Maybe I need a steadier foot. LOL

In talking with Lars I definitely need to change my table to reflect what my gauge is reading in the car because Tunerstudio's reading is not steady like it used to be when afr was first installed and calibrated. Something must be off there. The throttle issue might need more research. Any input is more than welcome.

Going to dyno tomorrow in Jacksonville to see what this mk turbo is all about. If I make it I'll post my dyno results here along with video evidence regarding turbo kitty powahhh. Haha

So here are the results of the dyno from today at roughly 9 psi.

post the graph in rpm, otherwise the plot is useless

Here we go:

Something is way off on their dyno if it is only reading on the 140's for HP and torque. At wastegate level alone should be in the 170-180 rangre.

Any chance I can get pics of your hot side piping? I saw the ones you have, but if I can see down in front of the motor how you routed it, and under to the intercooler that would be great.

It's been a while now I'm going to focus on reliabilty, safety, and some minir touch ups:

Mounting tablet on top of tombstone to display gauges, play music, and anything else I want it to do. They make a bracket that mounts to dash (flanged) for $30.

I made a blanking plate out of plywood,i had laying around. Pine or Lexan would have been better I know, but efff it. Haha

Lean out tune for better mpgs - still a bit rich across VE table.

Intercooler & radiator ducting

Brake pads and rotors upgrade-front & back. Do i leave 1.6s on back??

Might do wheel spacers (rice mod I know) but i cheaped out and got 15x7s due to the awesome $298 discount I got!

Iconel studs for turbo

Mount rollbar from Lars.

Eventually an oil cooler with temp gauge.

Any and all feedback is welcome!

So I am now taking the MX5 to the new level: Boosted and Built! I just bought a 2002 1.8 VVT Engine from a member on here with 207K miles on it. The plan is to buy the following parts to get this thing going:

Boundary Engineering Oil Pump

Engine Cylinders will be over bored to 84mm

Pistons: Supertech 8:6to1 with Wiseco xx piston rings

Manley H Beam Connecting Rods with ARP Rod bolts

Replace thrust washer

ACL Rod Bearings

ACL Main Bearings

Clutch: currently have a happy meal good for 318 ft lbs

ARP Main studs and head studs

Just bought an MS3 from Brain with knock sensor

Sequential Firing

And the obvious timing belt, all gaskets and seals change out.

Approximate remaining build cost: $ 2,200 excluding cost of new manifold and exhaust as needed.

UPDATE:

Boundary Engineering Oil Pump

Engine Cylinders will be over bored to 84mm

Pistons: Supertech 8:6to1 with Wiseco xx piston rings - purchased!

Manley H Beam Connecting Rods with ARP Rod bolts - going to go with the Ebay rods with ARP2000 3/8" bolts. Should be like $250 vs. $350

Replace thrust washer

ACL Rod Bearings

ACL Main Bearings

Clutch: currently have a happy meal good for 318 ft lbs

ARP Main studs and head studs - purchased!

Just bought an MS3 from Brain with knock sensor

Sequential Firing

And the obvious timing belt, all gaskets and seals change out.

As soon as parts arrive I will be taking this to the machine shop and having them do the following:
Check head for flatness/trueness - shave as needed - $60
Change valve seals - only going to cost $60 so its worth it to me. They can also see condition of other components in case I need to replace.
Plastigauge mains and rod clearances
Overbore block and shave the head - $120 roughly

All in all not bad for what this thing is going to produce.

All right! Despite the hot a** weather I have been able to get into my garage and do some work to this car!

In June I got my first autocross run in! Had a ton of fans when they saw the turbo in the car. People were fighting to ride a long with me and see the mkturbo glory.

All build parts have been purchased except exhaust manifold to transfer mk turbo over to newer engine. I will post a list of gaskets and seals I ordered from Priority Mazda in Tyson's Corner for reference even though you can find it in this thread.

I was able to paint my block to make it look better and prevent future rust.

Took a weekend to build drill press stand and shoe rack! Needed to get rid of shoes and too much crap in garage already!

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...ae4aaca97b.jpg

Pic of rods. With ARP2000 bolts in them they weigh 518 grams.

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...99fe32cac5.jpg

I replicated the ring filer using a dremel I saw in the internetz!
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...36f35fe8fd.jpg

And finally top rings filed down to 0.016" - second rings will be 0.018". Should be plenty for running ALLOFIT with the MKTURBOs!

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...8dbcc473f0.jpg

It's really difficult to not scratch cylinder walls a little when gapping rings, but it is just the nature of the beast...

Going to August 6th AutoX in Myrtle Beach if any of you are going PM me!

ysleem 07-21-2017 06:14 PM

Well was hoping to at least get a call back from Fab9Tuning. Been calling them and emailing all week and no response as to the status of my order. I ordered my parts 11 days ago. Left 2 messages and sent two emails. Nothing.

I was encouraged not to order from them. In the future they won't have my business.
