my guess on the backing-out studs is due to 2 reasons:
1) too large of tolerance between the diameter of the studs and the diameter of the tapped manifold
2) I had previously enlarged the mounting holes of the T3 turbine housing for larger bolts (M12) on the crappy Taco cast I had issues with - bigger is better right? This might have enduced m0ore play adding to gretaer vibration to the studs - dunno...
I since have a new T3 turbine housing and have ordered a new set of inconel studs from YTSE. The ARTech manifold is getting planed and time serts installed - M10x1.5
before they are installed, careful measurements will be taken to ensure the 0.01" max resbond gap hold is not exceeded.

Just an update -
After the manifold/stud failure I had at Road Atlanta, I yanked the manifold off and had to have the turbo flange milled, bored and tapped for timeserts. I believe the failure was the result from not having enough stud mounting depth in the manifold. So when installing the timeserts (14mm) my machinist had to bore deeper into the manifold flange to install them flush. We were able to get them in without breeching the exhaust runners, exposing the studs and serts to exhaust gases. NOW, the TSE studs mounted all the way down to the lands of the studs - before I had maybe an 1/8" exposed.
Install manifold and drove the car to the Races at Barber... started car and hear this bad exhaust leak at #4 - wtf? Anyway, have to go to races, drink beer, show off car... will deal with it later.
Drove the car to Barber to the Rolex/Conti races. That Friday after quals, a storm rolled in. On the way back I managed to get the car abosolutely sideways on the wet interstate in front of an F250 - not intentional! I was in the center lane, truck in front cars on left and right, acceled to get past car on right to get into right lane to get onto off ramp. Got into right lane, interstate had a gradual left turn, when suddenly the rear stepped out badly (must have been a puddle) shot in front of the truck sideways, staring at the concrete divider. Countersteered and snap steer shot into my mind - and it came and I was able to catch it. After straightening the car out I was staddling the left/center lanes! Anyway, I'm fortunate I didn't hit anyone... no more driving track car on roads when it's raining!
Parked the car, hopped in truck and met Mike (Doppelganger) and Jen for some beers - the complimentary spiced rum was great, so were the girls serving it!
Races ensue, crashes to be seen, beer to be drunk. Good times.
Get back to checkign out car - yanked off manifold - again (I'm getting pretty proficient at this) and found that the manifold head flange was warped by about 1/8"!! It pulled out from the ends, so once again my machinist was milling that surface. He says he told me it was warped, but I thought he was talking about the turbo flange... otherwise I would have fixed that the 1st time Reinstalled setup, also pulled diff to check lash after my "incident" - all ok.
Yesterday, took car to TPGR (little Talladega) and tore up some tires. Track is tight, not perfect for gearing with 6sp and 3.6... found myself winding out poor 'lil engine to 7500 several times. Not thilled with the lag I'm getting after switching to a 60trim... thinking maybe I should set back down to a 55 or 50 to get some more response back.
Don't know why I'm thinking about this when I have an un-assembled 1.8 waiting on me?!!?

So, put the car back on stands (need a lift) and pulled the 6spd. When I tipped it on the bell end I heard something rattle inside it - so I tried shifting into 5th - guess what - it went in gear. So there's obviously something loose inside the case that was/is preventing it from going into 5th. Since I bought it from PartsGroup, and share the track with him - he's going to inspect and replace it (if the trans is terminal) - and that's the reason why I'm not going to tear into the case, as badly as I want too. I'll let him do that.
So - bets on what it is? Rattle seems to be coming from the shift fork section...
But sadly - I had to replace it with a 5spd I had - I just hope it lasts long enough for 1 track weekend.

BTW, the MAIN reason for the failure was lack of thread depth. TSE's studs require 14mm depth - all the way down to the knurled portion at mid-stud (un-threaded portion). The timeserts took care of that - so far so good. I have also marked the studs at 12oclock to determine if they backout at all.

Since you were able thread it all the way down, looks likes like you'll be just fine. did you have your's timeserted and shaved? I see little rings around the studs... You did double nut and torque the studs right? Might not be able to on the shortened one...

doh! Man - I might have to cancelling out of nasa-se the weekend before. I'm signed for the 2nd instructor clinic (fri-sun), but then learned today that Sun is father's day - that didn't go over with the wife too well, esp since I'm instructing over Memorial Day weekend which also happens to be my B-day. Maybe I can do this in leu of that Nasa weekend? who knows....

That sway bar doesn't look right, are you sure it's not for a NB or something?
Just checked out mine, and it's angled like that, but the tabs are bent to be parallel with the end link, instead of perpendicular to the ground like yours. Knock them forward with a hammer.

Ok - those I've seen, but not sure exactly what where they 'stand-off' of. I'm assuming bar... my guess is that it allows use of the 'cones' for contact points on the bearing for much better movement. I was at first envisioning a more verticle link when you mentioned standoff - apposed to pic above, but yeah, what I have is junk.
