I agree, there's a certain satisfaction in the kind of OCD attention to detail required to do it right. It's a bit like assembling the bottom end. :)

You want to see electronic sadness? https://www.miataturbo.net/megasquir...-diypnp-68814/ :giggle:

Not shown in the pic, but I reinforced the junctions where the injector leads break off the harness with some of that awesome silicone tape. I wasn't happy with just the heat shrink on there and I wanted something that would make it a little beefier.

Oh, I agree. If I ever have the occasion to go through that again, I'll probably do it myself.

Hey G. Go look at the last bit of my build thread. Got the vei gauge to fit in the stock gauge area with just a bit of dremeling.

How in the hell am I NOT subbed to your build thread? I got some readin' to do, thanks for the heads up!

It fit wayyy better than I expected. The ring on the front face centers it pretty well. I could maybe center it a bit better, but right now it looks like none of the numbers got cut off. I'll know more when I wire it.

EO2K 03-19-2015 11:53 AM

I knew it would fit, I just haven't had to motivation to make it happen. Good thing I have like 3 extra clusters in the garage.

Now I need to find some brushed aluminum gauge rings to match the VEI ones.

The rings actually hide behind the cluster face.

I'm not sure I have that much space in the NB cluster, but I'll have to look.

How are you going to get to the buttons on the gauge faces?

By taking the gauge cluster out :)

I plan on setting them once and not touching them again.

EO2K 03-19-2015 01:38 PM

But... recall function!

aidandj 03-19-2015 01:52 PM

Hmmm. Did not think about that. Drill a hole and get a chopstick?

aidandj 03-19-2015 01:55 PM

Although to be honest I don't really care about recall. I just like the alarm feature.

And while its too late for both of us you can call vei and get a motorcycle version of the gauge which has an external button.

EO2K 03-19-2015 02:13 PM

Not too late for me, that's how I ordered them

I still need to program in my alarm and recall stuff, then figure out where to put the buttons.

aidandj 03-19-2015 02:14 PM

Ahhhhh, screw you. I wish I had known before I ordered. Oh well. If I were to use buttons I would put them in my custom switch panel I'm laser cutting...

If there's an external button option available, odds it's the same circuit board with just some different bits soldered in. Shouldn't be too hard to take it apart and add some wires to an external button.

Too much effort for something I'll probably use once. Also, these things are really hard to take apart. Without drilling or something.

That's kinda why I never finished my cluster project. Though at this point I'll probably just butcher something together and see what happens.

aidandj 03-19-2015 05:01 PM

Yep I remembered reading that. So instead I thought that I was going to hack this together #becauseracecar but then it turned out surprisingly nice.

Well, fuck.

And suddenly I realize the Miata, the Subaru and the Dentside are all manual transmissions.
