There isn't one under the drivers seat?

I think thats why you run it that way. so the engine cant pull on the mount but it can push. Pulling is how the mounts fail for the most part and this will add some compliance in compression making it feel smoother.

Braineack 09-20-2012 11:38 AM

I'll buy it.

btw, here's how my mounts look:

The "pull on the hard mount, push on the soft mount" theory was what I've heard as well. I'm certainly no innovator though, I've read about several other people running that setup so I tried it and I liked it.

Not until '96 apparently.

Just got her cranked on the megasquirt, man that's a good feeling the first time it fires up. Maybe it's just me screwing stuff up, but they never seem to be as "plug and play" as I imagine.

Also got a few parts in today from my good buddy at ImportImageRacing.com, more on the way. :yippee:

Yesterday I finished getting the megasquirt set up and started doing a little tuning so the tune is pretty close now.

Today I finally got the 6 speed, flywheel, clutch, and starter swapped in. I kept trying to recruit someone to help me do it but wasn't getting any volunteers. Pulling the 5 speed out was a pain, and really made me dread trying to get the new transmission in. When I finally gathered the motivation to try to get the 6 speed in I benchpressed it, everything lined up perfectly, and the thing just jumped right in place, awesome. The car feels so much better with the shorter gears, especially given the complete lack of power

I couldn't find much info on a 6 speed tranny/starter in an NA so I made sure to document my observations.

First of all, I've read "One starter bolt doesn't line up." I compared the 6 speed NB starter to my 5 speed NA trans and the upper outside bolt is in a different location. Since I had the starter and transmission from a 6 speed, the only issue was the plate between the motor and trans, which I cut to fit.

6 speed starter, 5 speed trans (would work with 2 bolts but not the 3rd):

Only other issue swapping the transmission in is 2 wires (I believe for the reverse lights), but it's an easy fix.

These 2 connectors on the 5 speed get cut off and attached to the 6 speed:

These 2 get cut off the 6 speed and replaced with the 5 speed connectors:

Other than that everything drops right in.

Took a few weights as well, clearly these are super accurate and official:

Last thing for the night was to take some datalogs and run them through Virtual Dyno to see how she's doing! If was just getting to dusk for this 4th gear pull, so I had the headlights on. After the first pull I started to wonder how much the headlights would affect acceleration so I turned them off and did another pull. +7hp! lol

Got a clue of what the block weights without the head?

pdexta 09-23-2012 11:04 PM

I dunno if I can figure out a way to weigh it on my bathroom scale. When I pull it apart in a few weeks I should be able to weigh it piece by piece.

triple88a 09-23-2012 11:16 PM

I guess i'm hoping that its light enough to carry by hand without the head. I'm definitely surprised the tranny is only 90lb

18psi 09-24-2012 08:16 AM

You "could" carry the bare block by hand, I've tried it, but its a royal PITA and definitely should not be lifted by 1 person unless you want to destroy your back.

Reverant 09-24-2012 09:09 AM

I've carried a bare block by hand at a car show, from my car to one of the show tents, must have a been a nice 500 feet. My back was fine, my hands however...

pdexta 09-24-2012 09:57 AM

All yesterday I had this feeling that I'd screwed something up, then I couldn't sleep last night. When I looked at the pictures again this morning I figured it out... #@*(&^T!&(!!!

I forgot to put the pilot bearing in my new flywheel. No wonder the transmission went in so easy, ugh. The car drives and shifts fine, no unusual vibrations or anything. I'm so tempted to just leave it alone since I'm going to swap motors soon anyway, but I know I need to pull it and put the bearing in before it destroys the transmission and/or clutch. So depressed :(

Braineack 09-24-2012 10:09 AM

that's a 2 hour fix, just do it.

shlammed 09-24-2012 10:28 AM

yep. just do it.

your transmission input shaft seal will be royally fucked in about a week of DD without it.

pusha 09-24-2012 10:05 PM

Before you do it, launch the car and record the results for posterity

pdexta 09-25-2012 11:43 PM

Yesterday I left work early so I could install the pilot bearing and on my drive home I noticed a very slight miss in the car. I get to the busiest intersection in SWFL, stopped at the light and when I start to accelerate the miss gets considerably worse. The car drops to 2 cylinders, then dies, and stops, right in the absolute middle of the intersection. Everyone is honking and flipping me off as I'm frantically trying to crank the car. It starts ever so slowly rolling backwards down the crown of US41. I manage to back around the guy who's directly behind me and stop the car between the left most straight lane and the left turn lanes.

Finally I get the car restarted, still on 2 cylinders, but it will run if I hold it around 3000rpms. When the turn lane gets the green arrow I floor it, dump the clutch (just as pusha suggests) and manage to inch across the highway and into the nearest parking lot. I called AAA and after 2 hours of waiting, I get a call that they have to go pick up another car and then they will come get me. Finally get home and by that point had lost any motivation to even look at it. Luckily my girlfriend was off today so I was able to take her car to work.

Came home this afternoon, swapped the car back to the stock ECU since I haven't had a tach since installing it, and still had the same problems. Swapped back to the megasquirt and identified which coilpack was causing the issue. Installed a spare 99 coil and the car runs fine, still no tach signal since the 99 coil doesn't have a tach signal.

Then I dropped the tranny, pulled the cluch, installed the stupid pilot bearing and put it all back together. So I guess what falls apart tomorrow.

I've got to get motivated to fix my car after work. I always have trouble getting started on weekday evenings. Are you ready for the trackday in a week and a half? My car is still in pieces.

I have a soft spot for R-Pkgs. Glad to see this one is in good hands.
