I'm looking forward to see how it performs compared to the EFRs.

Blew up at about 100k eh? Sorry to hear that. Hopefully my "new" NB motor with over 100k lasts longer than a few hundred miles. If not, i get to rebuild it so that's cool I guess.

My 1.6 was still holding all I could throw at it with 176k, lol.

This build is going to be the win, in for results. You selling your old gt28?

pdexta 12-13-2012 05:42 PM

I'm eventually going to sell the gt28, already gotten a few PMs on it. I'd like to hold onto it until I get the new turbo in and running just to make sure everything is good since I bought it used.

Hoping to make some decent progress this week since I'm off work. I pulled the motor yesterday but still have to assemble my other block and swap out some damaged valves on my head. Took a picture of my pile of parts that's taken over the extra bedroom and a 4x speed video of pulling the motor if you want to waste 52 seconds of your life.

When you pull hard enough the thing just pops right out of there.

Progress has been slow, I've been sick as crap lately. Finally starting to get better and made some progress assembling the block in the extra bedroom (on grandma's quilt, she'd probably be pissed).

I weighed out the pistons, rods, and wrist pins and matched them up to even the weights out. I'm probably way over my head on this stuff, but I'm not smart enough to realize it.

FaeFlora moment: Don't over tighten oil squirters, they tend to explode when manly torque levels are applied to them. :fael:

So nice. I'm preparing for my eventual build as well. What CR pistons did you end up with?

pdexta 01-13-2013 12:03 PM

I debated 9:1 and 8.6:1 for a while but ended up going with the 9:1 pistsons.

I really lost motivation for a while and didn't make any progress, but found some inspiration last weekend and got a lot done. I finished assembling the head and block, painted the block and oilpan, put the oil and water pump on, put the head on, and got it timed. I've been trying to work on it a little everyday and, of course, keep finding new stuff I have to do and things I need to buy. I'm hoping to have the motor in this weekend. The last part I need (fuel rail) is supposed to be here Tuesday so I'd love to have it driveable on Wednesday, but that's probably optimistic.

I struggle to find motivation because it's 30 degrees in my garage. You're so close, looking real good.

I like that you went with a silver block, now you can really see any leaks when/if they occur.

I am looking forward to seeing this car in person.

wicked

miata2fast 02-24-2013 02:03 PM

You will be bringing this to the Lakeland Miata meet right?

I hope a lot of the Florida crew can get together and compare dicks; I mean notes. :giggle:

pdexta 02-25-2013 07:55 AM

Yes, I will be there. Are you bringing your car out? I'd love to see it.

miata2fast 02-25-2013 08:27 AM

I will not be driving it there unless a miracle happens. It is currently a bare tub.

You can still see it if you go to my shop before or after the event. It is close to the Lakeland Hooters. We may end up meeting at my shop before going to the event.

I got everything put together and can't get the stupid thing to crank. Definitely getting fuel and spark and I'm pretty sure I've got the timing right. Probably something stupid but it's driving me nuts.

Also have to figure out what I'm going to do with the exhaust. My Artech downpipe was set up for a separated gasses internal wastegate. The new turbo has an external wastegate on the turbine housing. With the current downpipe there's no room for the wastegate dump, which I was planning to run for a while just to get it back on the road. I'm hoping I can just cap off what was the internal wastegate and tie the external wastegate back into the exhaust, but I guess there's no point in worry about it until the car runs. For now, she'll stay hoodless with the wastegate out the top.

in all seriousness I hope you can find the problem. I want to see the finished product at the all Florida meet.
