You don't know the half of it I mean, I'm trying to at least make it livable again but i don't think it's worth the effort to make it "nice." If you want a nice NA this is not the car to start with. I'm just kinda shooting for "nicer" or "will probably be fine, maybe won't explode and kill me"

If I could find one in good shape and it wasn't a million dollars I might do it. Unfortunately there's some weird borderline fetishistic insanity that goes along with NA6 dashes, and I'm not about to dip my toes into that particular puddle.

Have you ever thought about a 93LE interior swap. I happen to know for a fact that they look great in a black NA.

If you hadn't already purchased all of them I might have considered it

Bizarre really. I just pulled up numbers off mnet and 138041 NA6 were sold vs 77323 NA8 (not sure if worldwide or just murica, but data from mazduh in CA) So you would think you should have 79% more carcasses to pick up a clean NA6 dash from, or something. It's **** about.

I nominate this for best thread 2020. Just like 2020, it keeps getting worse the longer it goes on, but you can't look away because it's so entertaining.

HAH! I'm glad my trainwreck can be so entertaining

More to come, but progress has been much slower than I'd like it to be due to terrible air quality. Parts are piling up and its incredibly frustrating

Figured you guys would enjoy this one...

So I've got a new problem with the car where I can't get the damn driver door shut. Cursory investigation followed by brute force and ignorance shows that I CAN get it shut, but it takes excessive force. Let's take a look at the latch mechanism:

**** yeah, bondo in the end of the door.

I threw those Philips head screws in there because they were the lowest profile things I've got. Unfortunately the crusty bondo is preventing me from adjusting it in any meaningful way.

But why is there bondo in the end of the door?

When the car got ***-packed I assume it was hard enough to close up the door openings juuuust enough to do some damage to the doors. Looking at the front hinges, well, there's some more parts that came from that NA6:

So clearly this door has seen some ****.

I think you can also juuuuuuuust barely see some red paint coming through what looks like bondo on the surface of the rocker panel at the bottom of the door (I exposed this with the brute force and ignorance, lol)

So maybe part of the rocker is also NA6? I mean its covered up pretty well, how's the other side look?

I mean, clearly she's had some work done.

Looks like a little bit of rust in there too. Lots of options for seat mounting holes too

Almost forgot the money shot:

Hahahaha!

I've honestly never seen this car with the carpet out, or I never processed it. Also makes sense as to why there was no mounting points behind the passenger seat for the NA8 ECU. Pretty amazing, right?

So update on the door latch:

I flooded the thing with lube last night and I think that just made it worse. I even went as far as to remove the door stop bumper/bushing thing and also put washers under the striker, thinking the alignment may be off, and I disconnected all the pushrods and levers inside the door thinking they may just be out of adjustment. Nothing seems to help and the door won't stay shut. At this point no amount of violence will get the "blade" in the latch to flip over the striker. I confirmed function on the passenger door that I should be able to push the blade back with a screwdriver and it'll lock in place. Unfortunately the driver side latch doesn't hit that lock point at all. I suspect years of abuse and missing fasteners have taken their toll and that latch is just straight done.

After contemplating some rather creative and silly solutions to the problem I remembered seeing in my email that the local Pick n Pull was running a sale...

Haha! **** yes!
There's a red NA6 rattle canned black in my local yard that still had it's doors as of last weekend. I'm still working from home, as is my wife, so I let her know that today at lunch I'd be heading over to the junkyard to buy a whole door. She somewhat dubiously asked what that would cost so I told her it was usually around $80, but they've got a sale going right now. She looked at the sale notice, laughed and said

"At that price you should treat yourself and buy two doors!"

I'm not sure if she's joking or not, but that sounds like affirmative consent to me so imma get me some doors today

I may have simply missed this... but, how did you find this far enough away from home that you had to bring it on a flatbed?

Since I sold this car I've known all the POs as it's changed hands. I believe all but one of them are members of this forum, and they are certainly aware of this thread

Well, hello there little one. Don't worry, this won't hurt a bit...

Shazam! Got me two doors and a bonus passenger side fender!

Jesus this door is gross. ...and of course the bondo starts popping off the driver door as soon as I get it on the cart, lol.

Flipping the glass is worth $25 by itself, plus I got window regulators and latches out of the deal so no complaints. I'll probably try to transplant the latch first and failing that, I'll just load up the whole door. If that's the case then the gross plasti-dip will have to go.

Are we sure that door is any better than the one that's on the car now? That's a lot of bondo haha.

I have a slightly dented but very functional yellow door that you can just...have.

I honestly have no idea at this point if this door is any better than the other one. It's actually more the guts that I'm interested in.

That would be MOST AWESOME and MUCH APPRECIATED! Thank you very much for the offer and I may take you up on that at some point, but I'll know more after I dig into things this weekend. I have a friend who lives in Emeryville who drives up to Thunderhill fairly frequently that may be able to transfer if I ask him really nicely and maybe threaten them with gas money. Hopefully just the latch transplant will get me closed up again but thanks for the offer
