I think exhaust noise and rattles were due to the v band for the downpipe coming loose a bit so spent a bit of time getting that sorted tonight. Huge pain since it had rattled itself to a spot where I could barely get to it...

While under there, I poked around and I'm pretty sure my turbo is leaking oil from the drain flange. The bolts weren't lose so I think it might have just been the gasket drying out from the parts sitting through the winter. So I'll have to take care of that soon too.

Gasket drying out? That's a new one. I don't think you will find that to be the case.

That's the area where I saw the oil collecting. Though it is the lowest point of the turbo itself so that could have been sitting there as well.

There was a bunch of talk on ADJs thread about the drain line backing up but I don't have any smoke coming out the exhaust, so I don't think that's it. We also tapped the pan with oil still in it so it shouldn't be fighting things there. I only see a bit of oil smoke in the bay after a drive and whiffs of oil during drives. I put in a tiny bit of oil today and I'll see where the level is sitting after a drive.

I want to take things apart a bit in the winter and move to a bigger drain line and fittings and possibly rebuild the turbo as well to see if that will fix things. There's never been any oil on the floor or anything like that with no undertray, so it's a tiny leak, but it obviously needs to be addressed.

Put UV dye in there and put a light on it. Alternatively, you could stop being lazy and take your turbo out and check it and all the gaskets, it takes like 30 min.

I think Todd did some wizardry for the turbo mount bolts so they're going to be a bit of a pain to get out. Ill double check and see what he did. I have a week off in mid August, i'll order that ish and the turbo rebuild stuff then too. Or alternatively, put in dye to investigate first...that sounds smarter.

If I have to take the manifold out, its going to be a bitch to get things back on. The v band for the exhaust was hard to position. But that's what vacation days and beer are for! I do need to help bytevenom with a few things then too since we're trying to get our cars together for a couple of autocross events. There are two of them in my week off and I really want to go to both or at least one!

What do you think of the spool data?

No wizardry...FM studs with lock nuts and anti vibe washers...pretty standard stuff.

Well, it is Boston, if that was going to happen, it would happen there. I once towed my car to the shop, only to find out that water had condensed on the inside of the gas tank and froze on the pick up. He called me and said come get your car, there's nothing wrong with it. Fran's in Southie, a super honest shop.

Yeah, parts were in my unheated attached garage over the winter.

Side note: I almost had my car towed to Frans on your recommendation. Will definitely go there if I need something in that area.

He runs an honest shop, they don't do everything, but it's nice to know a place like that when something breaks in the winter in Southie. I learned of all kinds of weird stuff that I had never heard of going wrong there. The crazy salty, frozen, dry winters followed by the hot humidity.

Car definitely had an exhaust leak between the elbow and down pipe vband. Exhaust is a lot quieter now too. I'm going to look through fuel and boost tables a bit since those can be affected by exhaust leaks. It wasn't a huge leak so it should be okay. I'm curious to see if the VD is any different now.

Yeah my girlfriend was borrowing my impreza and it was giving her grief. We were going to tow it there but her dad's mechanic was available so that's where it went. I sorta wish it had just gone to Fran hah.

I've had my drain gasket fail after sitting in the winter as well. As added security, I've had no leaks by adding a small bead of black RTV to aid the adhesion of the seal.
It could also be possible that his bolts that hold the flange need to be retorqued. I don't think I saw any sort of lock washer on his flange bolts last time I took a look see at his turbo.

I also bored my drain out as it was a few mm smaller than the drain outlet of my turbo.

I'm under the impression that my BOV, an oem unit from an eclipse, is leaking at idle. It's not adjustable and I believe this 'functionality' was there for cars running AFM/MAF.

I'm having a hard time finding anything that will work with the setup, which is the old begi piping. My cold side piping is 2 inches and all the greddy/hks/whathaveyou styles seem to come with 2.5 and up attachments.

Would there be any issue running an old style unit like this: SS Style BOV Flange
I'm just trying to chase down any leaks I can find and currently I can hear a huge hiss at idle with the hood open.

On the other hand, is this something I even have to fix? I have no issues holding boost during WOT and things are pretty stable during driving. I read through this thread and it seems that this isn't supposed to happen in our cars: https://www.miataturbo.net/diy-turbo...-levels-81073/

Open to any suggestions.... or even used BOV's if you'd sell something that you think I can use!

Also!!!!
I think I'm going to try to make this next weekend when I start my vacation next weekend.

You should fix as many boost leaks as you can. Otherwise you're overworking the turbo and losing response.

That BOV came with the same old kit that your modified 2" piping is from. It was designed for a recirculating setup, pre MAF, but it works fine because you no longer run MAF (your MS uses a MAP in case you were unsure). Want a piping upgrade? Call FM and order their silicone inlet/ outlet piping. It will bolt right up to your turbo/ intercooler...I'm sure of it. Ask them for the proper BOV too.

he's trying to create a problem instead of fixing actual problems
ms is like a honeybadger, it doesnt' care about open valves at idle

I understand. I'm trying to fit a regular BOV built to VTA in this setup without taking everything apart at this point. I read up on some of the DSM/Eclipse forums where the BOV from your kit came from and many of them went to the style of BOV I linked to from silicone intakes. I don't really care what style of BOV it is as long as it doesn't leak. I was asking if it even mattered because today I hit my target boost of 10psi at 3629 starting at 1880 in 4th gear so the spool is pretty good. I'm just trying to cross my T's and dot my I's here!

Vladdddddd Y U DU DIS? Hahhaa, I was going off one of your posts from the thread I linked regarding a megasquirt not needing to have that leak when the stock ECU needed it. I thought your advice there was to change things around so they didn't leak. I have no problems fixing the other stuff that's actually an issue first! I was just going on your info where it seemed like it was an issue. Color me confused.

That said... my break time will be shorter than I'd hoped. I'm heading back to PA early next week to see my family. We have to put down our 13 year old beagle because he has cancer that's spread everywhere. My sister's flying back home for 36 hours from her internship in Berlin because we all wanted to be there for it. Life is bittersweet sometimes. I'm hoping to get things to a point where the car won't explode at the autocross school ish next saturday. Then I'll plan to drive the car to PA.
